Connect Smart Home Devices to Alexa

You can connect compatible smart home devices, such as lights and plugs, to Alexa using Guided Discovery or smart home skills.

Before you begin:

  • Check that your smart home device is compatible with Alexa.
  • Complete setup for your smart home device, using the manufacturer's companion app or website.
  • Connect the device to the same Wi-Fi network as your Echo devices.
  • Download and install the latest software updates for your smart home devices.

Use guided discovery to connect a smart home device

To connect a smart home device using guided discovery, in the Alexa app:

  1. From the menu, select the Add Device.
  2. Select the type of smart home device you want to connect.
  3. Select the brand and follow the on-screen instructions.

Discover smart home devices with a skill

Important: Before you enable a smart home skill, please read Safety Information for Using Smart Home Devices with Alexa.

To discover smart home devices using a skill, in the Alexa app:

  1. Go to the menu, and then select Skills.
  2. Find the skill for your device, and then select Enable. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the linking process.
  3. Ask Alexa to discover your device. Say, "Discover my devices," or select Add Device in the Devices section of the Alexa app.

Note: If there isn't a skill for your device or service, it may not be compatible with Alexa. If it is compatible, go to Voice Control Smart Home Devices Without Skills.

To find answers to frequently asked questions, in the Alexa app:

  1. From the menu, select the Add Device.
  2. Select the ? icon.
