Learn how you can use your remote to navigate and control your Amazon Fire TV.
To quickly navigate your Fire TV device, use these remote shortcuts:
Go to the Fire TV Home screen - Press the Home button.
Return to the previous screen or menu - Press the Back button.
Select an item or option - Use the directional keypad on your remote to scroll left, right, up, or down. When your selection is highlighted on-screen, press the middle Select button inside the directional keypad to select it.
Search for content - If you have a Fire TV remote with a Voice button, you can use your voice to search for content available on Fire TV. Just press and hold the Voice button, and say what you're looking for. While searching in supported apps, you may be able to enter text with your voice while the keyboard is on-screen. Just hold the Voice button and say the words that you want to type. You can also enter a text search by selecting Search from the Fire TV menu. Fire TV Stick Basic Edition does not include a Search option from the Home screen, but you can search within the Amazon Prime Video app. For Amazon.com, Fire TV Alexa voice features are only enabled for customers in the U.S.
Open the Quick Access menu - Press and hold the Home button on your remote to launch the Quick Access menu.
View more options - Use your remote's directional keypad to highlight an item or on-screen option, then press the Menu button to view more Options.
Restart your device - Press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons at the same time, for about five seconds.
Use the Fire TV menu at the top of your screen to browse your content by category.
Your Fire TV device automatically goes into sleep mode after 20 minutes of inactivity. Amazon Fire TV (1st Generation) devices go into sleep mode after 30 minutes.
You can also manually send your device into sleep mode. Press and hold the Home button on your remote to launch the Quick Access menu, then select the Sleep option.
Note: Before going into sleep mode, your device can also show a screen saver, depending on your screen saver settings. For more information, go to Amazon Fire TV Settings Basics.
To wake up your device from sleep mode, just press any button on your remote.
Because your Fire TV device automatically goes into sleep mode, you don't need to turn it off when you're finished using it. While in sleep mode, your device can still receive important automatic software updates.
However, if you want to turn your Fire TV device completely off, you can unplug the power cord (from the back of the device or the wall outlet).
