This is a unique book! First and foremost, this book is an atlas. It includes hand-drawn maps of California (mountains, rivers, forests, deserts, lakes, national forests & parks, the climate, wildlife, etc). The book covers a lot of subjects, but it does not develop any one area in-depth. The illustrations are beautiful. This book is not very large (see picture with a sheet of paper behind the book). I recommend this book, as long as you know what you are getting. Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much!
I don't even *live* in California, and I feel like I know it better than my own back yard after reading most of this book. I bought it largely for the illustrations -- I'm a sucker for nature documentation and illustration -- and sort of expected the rest of it to be just fluff.
It is not. It is not remotely fluff. This book is an actual asset to armchair and casual naturalists, as it's so stuffed with info, you can't help but learn more about the world.
The only drawback I can think of is that, despite it's small-ish cover size, it's a brick. The thing could be hurled at someone as a deadly weapon. I think it weighs more than the actual state of California.
And it's worth every ounce, whether you're reading it at home, or carrying it in the wild. I only mention it because long-distance hikers with an eye on weight might want to leave this one at home, or use it for pre-trip research instead, unless you need a boulder made of wood pulp on your walk.
I can't wait to see what this author/illustrator does next.
Beautifully decorated book. We gave it to friends who were moving away from California and they were super happy for it "I want to hide in a corner with this book and read it instead of doing work".
What an amazing book....it is hard to imagine accomplishing this in a lifetime. It is hard to classify this book . . . it is more of a meta-field guide than field guide per se. It can help orient your approach to studying a given California ecosystem, as opposed to covering each and every ecosystem in great detail. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book.
The watercolor is superb. His writing is soulful. Bought for my son in southern Oregon. I only hope his art will be published in a larger format book so I can take in the incredible beauty in my relaxing time back in Pennsylvania.
From my home state, comes this magical and gorgeous ode. Obi has quite a way with brushes and watercolors and words. California is presented in all its glory one map, one image, one description at a time. Get this book and marvel at one of the world’s most remarkable places delivered to each of us with love from Obi.
This book is a labor of love and is simply breathtaking. I have lived in California all of my life and some of my favorite moments have been spent in awe of the beauty that is the Golden State. This is a masterful work of art that captures the essence of what makes California California! I will be purchasing many copies of this jewel of a book to share with others.
This book is not like anything else I've ever read. It's a work of art and a beautifully executed attempt to capture California's soul in the way those of us who spend time outside know and love it. It's like a fine bottle of bourbon, enjoyed a few sips at a time, and I will be working through it and reflecting on it for a long time to come. I can't wait for the water book.
