Updated review: Piece of junk, buyer beware
on October 22, 2014
UPDATE as of 11/23/14
You can see my original review below; however, after just a few weeks of using this toy, it's now rendered useless. The somewhat flimsy door has now become so loose that it opens constantly, and the functionality of the toy is completely removed. All you hear now is "Open!" "Closed!" from the door constantly jiggling with the slightest touch. Put in a coin ... the door opens and interrupts the counting sequence. My child brushes up against the pig ... the door opens (then closes), interrupting the sequence. Breathe on the door... you get the idea.
I am really disappointed because I initially loved this toy as you can see from my initial review. Due to the cheap design, there is now no learning at all to be had from it. I will be contacting Fisher Price tomorrow in hopes of getting an alternate item, as I am out of the window to get a refund from Amazon.
I was very pleasantly surprised with this toy! I bought this toy for my 17 month old because he always wanted to play with his ceramic piggy bank, and this is the perfect substitute. There are either sound effects or songs in learning or music mode when your child drops the coins in, and it counts up to 10. Take note, however, that if you open the door in the midst of coin dropping, the count goes back to 1, but that isn't a big deal to me. The songs aren't particularly annoying like they are on so many other toys.
Press the nose for additional phrases and sounds. Bonus, the piggy sneezes and says "Excuse me." This was an awesome surprise, as my son thinks pretending to sneeze is hilarious.
* Volume control
Three improvements I think this toy could use:
1. The design of the tail makes my son (and me at first) think that you press it for a noise, as well - but it only turns. It's the same color and texture as the pig's nose and is a separate piece. My son finds this frustrating, so I wish they had just made this part of the overall pink plastic mold.
2. The door is a bit flimsy and opens on its own if the toy shakes a bit
3. I know pigs are pink, but I wish this also came in blue for boys. It looks a little girly in his room.
