3.0 out of 5 starsWET PERMETHERIN CAN KILL YOUR CAT Works as promised but pump is messy and inefficient
September 24, 2018
I have been using this on my hiking clothes for a year now. I combine this with deet on my skin. I have found no ticks and have only gotten mosquito bites a couple of times. I think those times may have been the result of uneven application. It is difficult to get an even application with the pump. Typically some areas are soaked while others are just lightly misted. I tend to err n the side of caution and use more in those spots. As a result I use alot more products per outfit than the literature touts. The problems with the pump are magnified when the it has been previously used. It seems to be a bit clogged and leaks onto the hand more. The thing that bothers me the most is the warnings concerning use of this product around cats should be more prominent. Fresh wet permetherin will seriously harm your cat. 40% of cats exposed to it die or must be euthanized. Once dried it is fine to wear your treated clothes around your cat. But even a small amount of wet permetherin can kill your cat. Many of the poisoning cases have occurred from the cat touching the bedding of a recently treated dog. I suggest applying it outside of the house, in a storage locker perhaps and then sending several hours out of the house away from the cat. Go shopping, catch a movie, whatever. This doesn't mean that if it rains on your hiking clothes you can't go home. It is only when the permetherin is in its initial liquid state that this is a problem. I do think it is negligent that these warnings are not more prominent. In my opinion every customer should be made aware of this pre-sale. Having said that I will not go hiking without it. I have no hesitations about going off trail in pursuit of the perfect photo.
