Fast & Sharp, but not what I need (AF "clanky")
on November 19, 2017
I would easily have rated this a 4 on image quality alone. Build quality is better than what I expected for a $400 lens. The thing feels like a pro-grade piece of kit. I'm extremely disappointed with its autofocus, specifically how loud and "clanky" it is. It very well could be the individual product that I have received. I have had good experiences with Sigma before. I'm returning it, only because its autofocus just doesn't hold up to all of my Canon lenses.
Now, that being said, for $400, if you want a good solid lens with a loud autofocus, I'd buy this in a heartbeat. It's accurate, a bit slow compared to Canon lenses, but fast enough if you have time to wait. When I say it's slow, it's much faster than my entry level Canon & Tamron lenses. It's quick enough and accurate enough, just not for my needs. Also, you really can't beat that constant aperture at a lens this price. Sure, there's the Tamron, but I think this Sigma is an all-around decent lens for most people.
