As a child, our family didn't have a television, but I did have a mother who enjoyed reading and would often take us to the local library where we could check out books. In time, I became an avid reader and eventually "The Boxcar Children" came across my path. Although I have forgotten many, many of the stories I've read throughout my life, this sweet story has always stayed in my mind.

My husband and I often read to our grandchildren in order to assist them with their reading assignments. I recalled this story and decided to download it onto my Kindle so we could read it to them. What a marvelous story of children who persevered during some hard times, stuck together, and finally found family. Divine providence was with them. From a child's perspective, I believe these types of stories encourage children to realize - one doesn't have to be wealthy to manage in life, one doesn't have to lose hope, there are some nice people along the way who will lend a helping hand and life can have a happy ending.

I love this book. The first one is my favourite out of all the boxcar books. I lost my book I read to my children, so I wanted to get another one to read to my granddaughter. This book is about children who lost their parents and make a home in a boxcar. The book is awesome to read for yourself or to children.

I never came across this book as a child - presumably it did not cross the Atlantic to the UK where I grew up on a diet of the Secret Seven and the Famous Five. So I thought I would check it out now as it sits at the top of many popularity lists.
Having read all the reviews I think many people must be giving it five stars just for nostalgia value because to an adult outsider like me it certainly does not get five stars for content! However it is a nice, child friendly story with a degree of action but nothing truly scary or worrying. The four children are caring and sharing and totally unreal, but this is fiction we are reading!
Today's children would still enjoy it for the pure fun of reading about four children setting up home in a box car and making a success of it. I can understand why it is so popular and why it holds a special place in the hearts of those who read it years ago.

Loved the Boxcar children books when young, so loaded this one to myKindle. A treat and walk back in time. So, if I at 71 years of age can still enjoy this, it is timeless. However today, it is less likely to appeal to over stimulated generation of computer internet savvy children with I pods and other computer like toys. I think parents could read this to their children, if I had grandchildren I would. Rereading so many years later, still had my empathy in the forefront for these "homeless" kids, fending for themselves.

I ordered this because as a child 66 years ago I read it and then the series. Actually the first time, my teacher would read us a chapter a day after lunch while we laid our heads on our desks. Now I am recording it for my great=granddaughter (first great grandchild) along with other childhood favorites. I imagine if it lasted in my mind that long, it deserves 5 stars, and I bought the entire set for my grandchildren when they were small.

This is a story about four children, siblings, who set out on their own after they are orphaned. They wish to stick together. They always look out for each other and "make do". The story is written at a children's level with no inappropriate language or behavior. I actually came upon this on a list of "greatest books" for children. It is significantly shorter than books like "Anne Of Green Gables" which I also really like.

I have been looking for books to read to my grandchildren and grand nieces and nephews. This book fills the bill nicely. The chapters are not lengthy. The book is not lengthy. The words are all comprehensible for a grade school child.

Our second grader got this book, and sat down and DEVOURED it!! It was his first chapter book, he is now on volume 2. and I got the third and fourth one to follow up. It is a great beginner for new chapter book readers, helping them transition from picture books because there are black and white silhouette drawings every five or six pages and the print is large.

This is a sweet story that will captivate young readers. It's suitable for ages up to 8 or 10, even youngsters too young to read for themselves. Four children learn to take care of themselves in ingenious ways by making a home in an abandoned boxcar. Written at the turn of the last century, The Boxcar Children reflects a simpler time.

Always loved Gertrude Chandler Warner's The Boxcar Children. My Mom was one of her students when she was younger, so there's that connection. And I like the resilience and willingness of the children to find a way to take care of one another and do the best they can and make do. Something we all can remember no matter what age we are or live in, I think.
