I am 72 years old and I have been reading science fiction since I discovered the genre 68 years ago. I remember well the first book I read, which was "Woman of the Dunes," by Kobo Abe. That book forever changed the way I looked at sand. Most of the current SciFi, seems ridiculous and does not expand the mind. This new voice brings back food for thought and it is well written. Thank you, Michael Crumley.

I am typing this with 1 hand in a splint so it will be short and may have typos. Read both Breakthrough books and could not have enjoyed them more, This author is writing just what I want to read. Great action, characters and locations, Acceptable level of shoot em up. Zero bad language, zero sex. I will put him on my keeper list and download every book he writes in this series. You will like him if you enjoy James Rollins or Jeremy Robinson. Better than the Cussler books being written by other authors. I really enjoyed these two books and lot and give the author a top recommendation.

I really liked this book, everything seemed to flow well and it really captured my imagination and at some points I never wanted to put it down as I wanted to see what would happen next. I am going to buy the next book now to see how the story continues. Amazing how good a book can be without profanity and sex.

We live on a boat full-time, have plenty of time to read, and love to fall into a good series. My favorite books are science fiction, include some relevance to our current time on this Earth, and have characters I love and can identify with. This series of books scores on all accounts, including the side benefit of including dolphins, my favorite mammal. While the books build on each other and the story lines are interconnected, it's not one of those series that should have been chapters of one book - the books in this series each stand alone in their own right. I love the characters, not least of which are Dirk and Sally, the dolphins. No spoilers here - I can't wait to read the next book!

A layered thriller is always fun, and "Breakthrough" works very well on its own and as the first of a series. Communicating with dolphins is kind of a "can't miss" start, and the story goes on to take us to Antarctica and a mystery at the bottom of the Atlantic. Each is backed up by apparently solid research, and has its own share of tense excitement. There are a couple of strong female scientists leading their respective efforts, an ex-Seal with his own typically heroic qualities, and an assortment of US government leaders. In the latter case, the National Security Advisor is one of the only characters in the book who comes across as a bit cartoonish in the villain role.

There is an important sci-fi element to a story that would otherwise be pretty routine thriller fare, and it is not the best part of the book IMHO. Nonetheless, this is a well told tale and won't disappoint most readers.

I have been reading novels lately about 1) WWII, 2) The Vietnam war and 3) isolated cultures in deeply rural China. They were all very interesting, well written, but I was really up for a change and I got it with this book. Over dinner tonight my husband asked what I was reading now and he raised his eyebrows when I said marine biology meets Star Trek. The book originally got my attention because the plot included human/dolphin communication. I've often thought about how little we understand whale and dolphin songs and clicks and what it would hold for us if we could "speak" with them and cooperate more. I did not expect the other worldly twist, nor how engrossed I would become. The pace of this story is breakneck --- in a good way. I am looking forward to the next book in the Breakthrough series.

I just couldn't get into this book. It seemed every chapter had different characters and each chapter was like starting a new book. I'm sure at some point they all tied together but by chapter 3 I'd forgotten who were in the previous chapters nor what they were up to. I had less problems with a Dostoyesky novel and they're rife with characters. I'm sorry to have to speak this negatively, I tried to read it. I really did. In short, boring and fails to grab the readers attention.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of potential to continue to build on and I want to read the next book the author writes. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat, wanting to read the next page and the next page and the next page. It wasn't the kind of shoot-em-up-heart-pounding action that can only be sustained for a short time before you become exhausted. Instead, the story gripped me to where I could see potential lurking around the corner, ideas sprung to mind, where was he going with this....I've got to read more to find out! I cared about each of the main characters. Seriously, the book could have been fleshed out more, three times as many words, and I would have loved it all the more. I typically read 800-1000 page books, so of course this felt short to me and left me wanting more. There were some parts that were predictable, but not annoyingly so, and there were a couple parts I didn't expect, some good, one in particular I was disappointed, but I think that part was just me wanting to see something worse happen so that they could rise above it in the end. Overall, I recommend this read highly (and in fact, I already have to a few people face-to-face) and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I read a lot!!! There isn't a time when I don't have a book going. (I'm retired). Of course I have my favorite authors. Until 2 days ago I hadn't heard of Michael Grumley. A friend of mine sent me a text and told me to get my kindle and order Breakthrough. He said I wouldn't be disappointed. OMG!!! I couldn't put it down!!!! It was a little different than the books I usually read But I was NOT disappointed. I just ordered the 3 remaining books in the series. They are in my kindle and I'm starting Book 2 - Leap, as soon as I finish this review.

I was really prepared to not like this book, it opened like every cliche disaster movie . Funny thing though, it grabbed me with incredibly written suspenseful scenes that more than made up for the minimal character development. I did not know this was the first in a series of books, so I have expectations that the characters that were introduced will be more fleshed out in the following books. A very enjoyable reading experience.
