If you are looking for a quick, short read on your next business trip or long weekend, I would highly recommend War Hero. This is a very light piece of literature that steers clear of any deep or difficult topics. It is simply a nice story about a soldier and his adopted dog set during the dramatic and harrowing period of ww1 1917 in war torn France. Talty plays a little loose with historical facts (Patton wasn't a General in ww1 for example, he was a newly minted Army Captain) but it doesn't diminish the heartwarming tale of Rags the soldier dog and his adopted owner Sgt. James Donovan.

Read it. Enjoy it. Go to bed with a smile on your face. :)

I bought this more because I'm a war buff than anything else. But I gotta admit, that little terrier named 'Rags' won me over after about 5 minutes of reading. Terrific read for history lovers and animal lovers alike!

Fortunately WAR HERO is a short, very readable book. I use the word 'fortunately', because I could not put the book down until I finished reading it and wiped the tears from my cheeks.
With a red face I am admitting that I knew so very little about The Great War--Word War One. Thanks to the author, I received a much-needed history lesson to include: the laying and repair of field communication lines that were a vital part of keeping soldiers alive, the amount of soldiers who were wounded and killed, the fact that human runners were still used to deliver messages from one field commander to another and that the United States did not have, as did other countries, trained canines in that war.
Rags, the stray dog that was never truly trained t be a 'war dog' was more than a soldier, he was a true friend, one who risked his life to save many soldiers, and like a true friend he mourned the death of his closest comrade--the man who found and adored Rags. When the war ended, Rags went on to live a good life--one that was rightfully honored by many men who knew of his exploits during the war. Stephen Talty, you and Rags did a darn good jobs of making tears stream down my cheeks! Should I thank you or simply continue to cry?

A short story of Rags, the war hero dog of WWI. Rags is discovered, follows a communication soldier around and helps in the work as well as delighting the soldiers. Neat little story that reads like fiction but I did search it on Wikipedia. Very short and delightful with insight in to this brutal war.

Going to the beach? Take this story along. While it does suffer from a reporter's slant, that is it has a tendency to be a string of observations from war diaries or first person interviews, there is a good story shining through. It is not a dramatization of the dog's life or of the Sargent's life but a brief history of their comradeship during the great war. It is full of the daring, self sacrificing, in the face of death stuff that makes battle vulcanize relationships among men with just enough of "feed the hungry puppy" to remind you of what the battle is over. A good read, I liked it.

Great book. Heart warming about a solider and a stray dog he comes across in the streets of Paris. A bonding between this street dog and the whole 1st division of the American Army during WW1. From a priviate to the commanding general of the 1st Division, Rags won the hearts of all for his caring attitude to his great bravery. A good fast read.

Very touching story based on truth about a soldier and the dog he finds in France during WWI. The story is well written, informative, interesting and shows the bond between a man and his ever faithful dog. I was very emotional at the end. This is a must read for anyone who loves dogs and wants to be informed about their involvement during WW! and some soldiers during action in France.
