This volume collects the first six issues of the new Darth Vader solo comic series. In my opinion 'Darth Vader' is the strongest of the comics which have come out so far ('Star Wars', 'Princess Leia' and 'Kanan: The Last Padawan' being the others). Kieron Gillen is one of the best writers in comics today and excels when writing non-heroes (just see his amazing Kid Loki 'Journey into Mystery' series for proof). Salvador Larroca's art isn't revolutionary but it is very good and the colouring by Delgado brings the comic to life.

Darth Vader follows the title character after the events of 'A New Hope' as he attempts to discover the truth about the young pilot who destroyed the Death Star, and as he tries to remain on the Emperor's good side. We find Vader teaming up with a young rogue-ish character and a deadly droid to give him a slightly more human/approachable side for the reader.

Of particular note is issue #6 which crosses over with 'Star Wars' and is a great look into the emotions that Vader feels. I won't spoil everything, but the last panel is as good a close to a first volume as you could hope for.

The only downside to these initial trade paperbacks is they are often short on extras. I would have loved to see some of the variant covers for #1 included in the back; instead we just get some boring sketches. Alas.

This is the vast part of the new Canon by far. Marvel needs to be let go to do all of the EU over again. I want to see Marvel Darth Revan and Bane. Kanan Jarrus and Obi Wan and Anakin was also so strong. State Wars too and shattered empire. First five star from me in the new Canon.

Darth Vader is a great villain. This book ramps up his ruthlessness and intelligence. I was a little surprised by the level of violence though. Vader typically seemed like a villain that used others to get things done, which does happen here too. He also takes direct action at times. Capturing the different sides of Vader is one of the things that this book does really well. It even hints back to events from the prequels to flesh things out. And the art is top notch. Marvel does a great job of bringing in good artists for their books. This one won't disappoint in that regard.

The story itself seemed kind of weak to me though. The tension between Vader and Palpatine is good. It shows how harsh walking the dark path is. I feel like the story got pushed along at times in strange ways. It's almost as if the creators weren't sure how to connect story points and just glossed over things to keep going. That probably seems a bit harsh, especially because the book is good as a whole. Those moments just happened too often for my taste. This volume does a great job of fleshing out the Star Wars universe and getting into the head of Darth Vader. Fans of the franchise won't want to pass it up.

This is a great opening to the series. I am not a huge Star Wars fan, but I have always liked Darth Vader. This story fills in what happened to Vader after New Hope, which was really interesting. Well worth the read and I am looking forward to reading the next installment.

Takes points from the prequels and pulls out the potential that was never realized. It gives Vader personality and soul without taking away from his dark mystique. I'm ordering the rest of his story arcs.

One of the best new canon stories available. Perfectly takes elements from the prequel and original trilogy, weaving them together in a story that makes sense and is believable within the Star Wars universe. Fills in gaps that would seem like small details, but everything feels important and is both well-written and interesting. Can't wait for Volume 2!

This series is expanding so much on what made the Original Trilogy so good. Vader is a beast in the Star Wars universe and everyone knows it.
