In the spirit of the classic THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO, James McGrath Morris recounts the courage and ingenuity of Robert Ford, an Englishman who is suddenly trapped in Tibet by Chinese forces surging into the country. His small collection of radio broadcast equipment represents one of the last communication links with the Free World, but will he survive to tell what's happening, or will he be betrayed? Tune in! Read "The Radio Operator."

Morris brings to life one man's moment in history in a compelling narrative that adroitly portrays the radio operator and his participation in the last days of a free Tibet. At the same time, he provides a geopolitical context that helps understand the forces at work when China re-established control over the mountain region.

The short history is well written. Sympathetic to the loss of freedom and one man's commitment to a free people, brings a tear to the eye.

Told me a story that I didn't know about. I have been interested in the Dali Lama and Tibet for years.

I love Kindle Singles, and I especially love this book by James McGrath Morris, one of our best contemporary historians. (I'm always fascinated to see who he picks to write about.) This time it's Robert Ford, an English World War II veteran who helped the lovely, innocent country of Tibet monitor their Chinese aggressors via several radio stations. It's a gripping story, and fascinating to read the earlier chapter of a brutal struggle that's still going on.

I cannot think of anything bad to say about this book -- it was the right length at the right detail! I liked how Robert Ford’s time in Tibet was concurrent with Heinrich Harrer & Peter Aufschnaiter et al. (of “Seven Years in Tibet”). It was really neat hearing about them, especially Reginald Fox, from another’s point of view! The last section provided some nice closure. [Specific rating: 4.5+ / 5 stars]

More like a snapshot -- or single broadcast, than a book.
