I felt like this book was just ok. It was actually very depressing. The town was depressing, family that doesn't act like family, the thing with the sister, the thing with the brother. I didn't dislike Mercy, but I didn't love her either. Her character just didn't stand out. I don't know how to explain it. Not standoffish but something. I guess it's because of the way she was raised. I can understand that, but I still didn't like it or warm up to her. Unfortunately, there was no loving in this book except a couple of little kisses.

The thing with Levi made no sense to me. He seemed bright so his secret seemed ridiculous.

The stuff with Rose was hard to take and it was way too much!!! Good grief it was WAY too much. Grrr, it's hard writing this without spoilers but the story seem to fall apart during this time because of the Levi issue. It just didn't make sense that there are things that he knows, yet waits hours to say anything.

Anyway I didn't care for it. I will probably give the next book a try just because I usually love this author's books. Right now I feel like I need to go read something to get myself out of this depressing mood.

The author was doing fine, introducing her characters and their backgrounds and developing a decent whodunit. Then all her main characters, including cops and FBI agents (for pete's sake) developed stomach issues and weak knees every time something even vaguely surprising or threatening occurred. From the halfway point on virtually every chapter had someone with "knees turned to jello" or instant acid reflux of some sort. That, combined with the bodice ripping style of writing about the increasing romantic involvement of the two main characters, made for an unintentionally humorous ending.

FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick has gone back to her hometown of Eagles Nest to investigate the murder of 3 survivalists and the theft of their weapons caches. She left home when she was 18, estranged from her prepped family, and has never been back. . Mercy is working with local police chief Truman Daly. One of the murder victims was Trumans Uncle. Evidence at the current crime scenes possibly connects to the murder of 2 teens before Mercy left town.

This is the start of a new stories and it is a great beginning. The plot is great and keeps you in suspense all the way thru the book. There is an great cast of characters, some will hopefully be featured in future books in the series. There is some romance in the book but it mostly a suspense novel. The book is set in a small town and the author gives you a glimpse of what life is like living in a small town. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Stumbled on this book and its author, and I was pleasantly surprised. An especially good deal at just a few dollars! I'm from the country, so I understood the gun-toting, anti government, hillbilly mentality of the folks in Eagle's Nest. I enjoyed the writing style and slow character building. The romance between main characters was sweet and fairly realistic. I hope the next book gets a little steamier and goes deeper into that love story. I agree with another reviewer that the weakest part of the book is finding out who "dunnit" and why. I was looking for a larger twist! I read only a few chapters every night and had to keep reminding myself where I left off during that part. The best thing about the book is the strong, independent voice of Mercy -- a woman who is successful in her own write but still struggles with her past and the fears that can hold you back.

A Merciful Death *****
By Kendra Elliot
Mercy Kilpatrick, an experienced FBI Special Agent, is called upon to return to the community where she grew up to investigate the murders of two men she once knew. She was raised to be prepared for the worst that could happen to society, but the society of her own family deserted her when she most needed their support. Fifteen years before, she left town at the age of eighteen and built a life for herself, apart from those she loved. Mercy hides her estrangement from her parents and siblings from her FBI partners, making her return doubly awkward because she’s on edge, nervous about being recognized and probably shunned. When she meets the new Chief of Police, Truman Daly, they begin to work together comparing notes of past and present. It soon becomes clear that the very events that drove her away in the first place have an intrinsic connection to the current victims, one of whom was Chief Daly’s uncle. Mercy has never told anyone the full truth behind her reasons for leaving home and family. But knowing Truman Daly has as much at stake when it comes to solving the mysterious links, she wants to come clean with him, but he’s a lawman, too, so she doesn’t dare.
Ms. Elliot paints a vivid picture if life in a “prepper” community, and the attendant stresses that lead to inevitable conflicts between different factions with the same goal in mind, but whose methods are at odds. Set in the countryside if eastern Oregon, this story brings to life the sights, sounds, and smells of an area she clearly loves. Highly recommended for fans of both mystery and romance novels, though the romance plays second fiddle to the crime-solving,

This book showed up as a special offer on my kindle. It was a very good story. It was a little slow in some spots, but that may be down to me wanting to figure out who the killer was. Mercy is a complex character with a rather dark history. Even after reading the entire story, I do not understand Mercy's father's choices. I got really hooked on the complex story, and stayed up far later than I should so that I could figure it all out. Good characters, interesting story. I will read the next in the series for sure.

I like the story plot and the people in the story. When I look on Amazon to find Christian mysteries I do it because I don't want to see curse words or sexual situations. I do like Kendra's writing but the curse words will keep me from reading more of her work.

It's difficult to describe this book as 'full of twists' because Elliot reveals the twists in such a way that you see them often just before they hit. Or if you see them further in advance, you wonder and doubt your own predictions. So unlike other stories (which I honestly hate) plot twists don't come flying out of left field, they make sense and push the story further. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

I'm disappointed in this Kendra Elliot book. She has had some well written books with plot, characterization and dialog moving along smoothly. So I know she can do it, but just did not in this book. The dialog is choppy, the two main characters are not well developed and do not connect in any way until there needs to be some kind of formulaic sex scene. As a result their "relationship" does not seem like it could even be possible. Nor does her relationship with her FBI partner...odd, forced, awkward....
Having said this, the topic of Preppers is interesting, tho is also a strong reason why the two main characters could never realistically be in a relationship.
