Isolated: A Jason King Thriller by Matt Rogers is the first of this new series. Matt Rogers has done a great job of introducing the world to Jason King, a U.S. Black Ops guy who is no stranger to danger. On a cool night in Australia, Jason encounters a couple of assassins and basically takes them out in quick fashion and deposits their bodies in an abandoned factory. This book has a super fast pace right from the start with Jason jumping in to save a young girl from a group of thugs to helping a man being consistently harassed by the same gang of brazen thugs. I love the sense of foreboding the author has created by having Jason King walk everywhere, Jason literally just seems to have the clothes on his back, yet, he is a man on a mission and seems more than willing and capable of fulfilling that mission. Well written, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend and looking forward to the next installment.

In the end I really hated this book! Matt Rogers writing is not bad. It is filled with extreme action. He has no understanding of the things he is writing about. His story detail is ridiculous. Jason King is the best of the best Black Ops ever. He is almost as fast as Superman and nearly as strong, except when faced with skinny guys. In hand to hand combat he can push his opponent really hard. When he wants to sneak up on his deadly enemy’s camp he parks in front and walks in the front door. When he needs a rest, which is not very often, he parks his very obvious nearly destroyed, car in the motel parking lot , next to Main Street and goes in for a nights rest. With major injuries to his head, foot and the rest of his body he walks, rather well, for two hours and covered in blood and swollen beyond recognition he rides off into the sun set. I could go on but I don’t want to be a spoiler for those who want to check my facts. In fairness, I enjoyed it in the beginning, even with the obvious flaws, but its ridiculousness grew on me till I nearly couldn’t finish the last pages.

Australian author Matt Rogers makes his literary debut with the first book in a projected series he calls the Jason King Thriller Series, and if ISOLATED is a sample of building a memorable character that will be durable through many volumes, then welcome Matt and welcome Jason King! Matt is young, lives in Melbourne, Australia, and has elected to make writing his life career. Of note, then next two volumes are already completed.

Matt understands the importance of grabbing the reader’s attention it the first pages and in the Prologue he offers a terrified man who has just witnessed a heinous deed escape to his tiny home only to be followed and executed as he is trying to alert the police. ‘Clutching the phone in his grip, it sunk in that he had stumbled upon something sinister, a secret that those responsible would kill to protect. He found himself plagued by the unshakeable feeling that he was in way over his head.’ We’re there, very much in the presence of evil and Matt keeps us tuned to his tale as he introduces his very well defined main character.

The synopsis provided distills the scope of the story well: ‘On a cold night in Australia, two construction workers driving along a deserted mountain road are gunned down inside their vehicle. The killings are fast. Efficient. An assassination, carried out with expert precision. The only witness to the crime is a man resting by the side of the road. Recently retired, he'd flown halfway across the world to escape his demons. Ex-U.S. black ops operative Jason King. Quickly spotted, King is targeted by those in the shadows of a small country town, ruthless killers determined to tie up loose ends. They have no knowledge of the violent past they are about to revive...'

Jason King is a hero with a background we slowly understand. He is wily, strong, wise, and repels danger as much as her tracks it down. He is a fine main character, a ‘born and raised’ American now in Australia, complex enough to keep us guessing, knows about mind games, and relentless in his mission to wipe out evil. It seems Matt Rogers has created a new mega-man! Grady Harp, August 16

This book was poorly written. The author constantly repeated how strong, fast, and superior the main character was. It was hard to get through this book.

The star of this story is Jason King. We learn that he is very tall and handsome and has a background in U.S. Special ops. In fact, as the story progresses, we learn that his ops haven’t just been black but blacker than black. He is certainly an interesting character. Hoping for a quiet holiday away from his past and particularly from his previous dangerous job, he is having a vacation in the wilds of Australia. Onto this quiet scene explodes murder and mayhem, and Jason finds himself unable to ignore what is going on around him, even though it seems that it is nothing to do with him at all. Like a modern day James Bond, Jason storms through these pages – every inch the action hero.

Isolated by Matt Rogers throws you into the middle of an action packed thriller at an alarming rate. The novel begins with an Australian police officer struggling to make a phone call after witnessing something in the woods near his house. As he struggles to call the special forces friends he had made while in the Navy, a man steps out of the shadows of his kitchen and executes the officer. Meanwhile across town, ex special forces operative Jason King is finishing up at a local bar and heads out on foot. After walking for a bit, King rests under a tree and takes in his surroundings. It is then that he witnesses the execution of two construction workers on the road by two assassins. King engages the two and kills one. The other gets away. Jason King then finds himself in a battle for his life as the small Australian time comes under siege by highly trained and deadly men who want to keep something in the woods a secret.
Isolated grabs the reader and refuses to let them go. The main character is engaging and the reader wants to know what he is going to do next. The narrative moves at such a fast pace, the reader can't help but wonder what happened in the woods and why it needs to be covered up so badly. I really enjoyed the read and I feel that anyone who enjoys military fiction or CIA/ Special Forces fiction will also greatly enjoy this new series.

Action packed thriller is such a cliche, but in this case the description is apt. This is a very fast paced combat type story that is a race to the finish. Yes, the protagonist is larger than life with hard to believe skills, but it is a very entertaining read. The fight sequences, whether it is guns, hand to hand, or involving other weapons are vivid, violent, and easy to follow - the latter being the hardest to get exactly right. This author has a gift for describing anything - details of an outdoor environment, small town living, a character's mood/tension, or action scenes are all effortlessly and expertly described so that the reader is able to picture exactly what is happening. I expected to read that the author had been in combat, or at least trained in hand to hand fighting. I very much enjoyed the story and am looking forward to reading the further adventures of Jason King.

The author clearly has the skills to create an attention-gripping action tale, but this book reads as if the author actually broke into Lee Child's house and stole an unpublished Jack Reacher manuscript. It's so blatantly copied from the Reacher series I'm not sure how he gets away with it. In addition, it is filled with so many spelling and grammar errors and an inexcusable ignorance of military culture, weapons or tactics that, even though it's an entertaining page turner, it just sort of falls apart about halfway through and comes across in the end as if it had been hastily written for a school creative writing assignment; without research, without proofing, without attention to detail. I don't like leaving negative reviews. I know that authors work hard to create their books and they rightfully feel a sense of pride in the accomplishment. This book just falls way below the mark, however. Perhaps it was an unpolished early effort and he has since honed his skills, but it wasn't enough to make me want to pay for the next installment.

This is a true thriller story but still somehow different from the usual crime plots I have seen until now. Matt Rogers writes with a heavy, thick, almost war-like language that represents the gruesome truth of the life, the skills and the authenticity of a Delta Force member. The invincible James King is a retired army specialist who finds himself in a horrible mess in the Australian small town Jameson. Even in the first ten to fifteen pages, he manages to kill four people.

The cold, precise dexterity of the professional killer is as admirable as the accurate descriptions by the author who undoubtedly has a special knack for knowing what it’s like to be in shoes of someone who kills for justice. I swallowed hard at occasions, becoming aware how dangerous it is to live the life of terror and how easily a man goes down. But James King is not only a killer and as the story goes by he grows up to be a true hero who saves many people probably because that is the only thing he feels comfortable doing. Still, his life is a choice and not a burden. No one likes war, terrorism and killings but with Matt Rogers’ James King I grew a newfound respect for people who live in isolation and deal with atrocities while the rest of us sleep like babies. I would love to have him by my side when in trouble!
