Wow, this game is awful. I almost want to rate it five stars for being the worst possible game on Playstation 4 entirely. There is no antagonist or protagonist, but two gods are mad and they both think they're in charge so they fight using boring heroes. I'm not familiar with 'Final Fantasy' games and only ever owning games without prancy magic spells might make me biased. The menu is horrible. It feels like it should be simple to understand but instead it's garbage. You can't play the story mode without doing everything else there is to do first, which means you, like possibly thousands of others, won't access the extensive tutorial until you lose seven consecutive matches. In the tutorial is a detailed list of selectable characters, but in the actual game is just a list of names. I just kept picking the Ultimate Witch because one button can kill the other team with a magnetic fireball. The voices are more annoying than you can imagine. I tried turning off all the voices and music to enjoy it, because every sound or song makes me cringe. It's like the game can't decide of it wants to be trance or drum n bass or jazz and sloppily combines them all. Every song felt like I had to move faster when really pressing two buttons will beat this game for you in no time.
Not sure if the developer let their eleven year old design the user interface with crayons or they just didn't care to make one, but it is terrible. Found it kind of sad that three developers who are known for making simple interfaces couldn't collaborate to make a functioning one, but then again during typing this review I burned a pot of coffee that runs on a computerized system, so I wouldn't trust my use of an operating system.
The game itself is even worse, you have to fight three players with your three, and three points wins the match. If your weakest wizard dies three times it's game over, no matter how quickly you dispatched the first two points. No skill is really involved, you press the Cross button until a prompt says you have the press the Square button. They tried granting you summons, which are big long animations, so I can get up to drink a gratuitous amount of alcohol and come back in time to drunkenly watch my characters die to giant robot lasers, which would be cool if it didn't occur every three and a half minutes.
They took everything you love from fighting games and botched it on purpose it feels. You are always locked to enemies, you always have visibly obstructing lines and data on every part of the screen and every character looks to be some variant of a space clown. I played for six hours and the story makes no sense at all, even after unlocking several of the movies that are supposed give you insight to the world, there is no consecutive information related to the last. Playing this game was like reading only the last page of a choose-your-own-adventure book.
Lastly, you can't stream this game on Twitch. There is a failsafe that cuts off your broadcast every time there is dialogue or a movie which is every few seconds, so your viewers will probably change channels immediately if they attempt to watch. What a terrible experience trying to leisurely play or watch a video game! The only game worse than this is probably the ported Xbox variant of the same title. Hopefully if you are a fan, you know well enough to stay away from this and if not, you can always trade it in for the half-dollar that it's worth.
