Bon Appetit won't replace Gourmet in anyone's life, but it does have interesting articles about places and restaurants. Total issues are devoted to themes, such as London or Mexico and those are interesting. My favorite feature is always the recipes from restaurants requested from readers. I have learned some very good recipes this way! As for the recipes themselves, they are written in a straightforward manner. The directions are written in plain English without complications. The pictures and drawings enhance the instructions. All that said, this is not a magazine for someone looking for complicated recipes. But, if you want a magazine that is pleasant to flip through and read, this is for you.

ordered this magazine because it was a good bargain and I just love it. Many good recipes every month to try and they are easy,too.

Plenty of recipes and ideas for meals. Nice mix of articles and information.

Hooray for food porn! Bon Appetit is stuffed with tons of great glossy photos of attractive dishes... a foodie's dream come true!
I've had a subscription to Bon Appetit for about 4 years now, and it is my favorite of all the cooking magazines out there. It is not too high-end or snobby and for the most part you will be able to find the recipe ingredients at your local supermarket. The recipes are generally not too complicated so an amature cook can create a classy meal to impress guests, or just try new things in the kitchen for fun.
My one complaint would be it seems that the issues are beginning to contain slightly fewer recipes than before and it sometimes feels like their target audience is more of a priveledged high-class lifestyle than an everyday home cook.
That said, considering all of the competitors, I think Bon Appetit is the middle ground and I would recommend it to all aspiring home cooks.

been reading the magazine for 5+ years and am going to cancel my subscription because the magazine has gotten to artsy and full of itself. Lucky Peach is popular because it is risky. Bon Appetit was good because the recipes were awesome and often not too complicated for a home chef.

I first got this as a free sample because of something else I had purchased through Amazon. My whole family loved it so much that we have been ordering it ever since. We both work in restaurants and consider ourselves to be foodies so it is perfect for us. We all(including my 5 year old daughter) get excited to look through it each month and find great new recipes that we have to try. There is a good mix of colorful pictures mixed in with the mouth watering recipes. I would say that this would be a good magazine even for someone who is not overly into food but who is looking for some good new dishes to add to their monthly repertoire or just a little inspiration.
