Good, but a tad too many anecdotes and name-dropping stories

Wow, the author tells so many stories and engages in endless name-dropping it was starting to turn me off. Still, there is much good theology within these pages and quoting from Church teachings. It is worth a read if you are interested in Social Justice and poverty issues.

Understanding the REAL crisis facing modern society.

This book is written by Carl Anderson, the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, one of the largest Catholic fraternal organizations. Prior to reading this book, I knew nothing about Mr. Anderson's background. Since reading the book, I have come to realize that he is a gifted writer and thinker. While having a respectable educational resume, he has an excellent ability to explain things in terms that the average reader can understand. The reason for this is because he does not focus on abstract ideas, but rather shares from his own experience, and experiences that most people can identify with.

The purpose of the book is to explore what is the underlining crisis facing the modern world. He notes that it is not dichotomy between liberal and conservative, nor between developed nations and developing nations, nor East and West, nor Northern hemisphere vs. Southern hemisphere. Rather it is between what Pope John Paul II called the Culture of Death and the Culture of Love/Life. After all, both communism and fascism reduces the human person to objects to be controlled and used, instead of subjects to valued and cherished. It is the dichotomy between those who see human beings as only having value based on some algebra of how much they contribute to society (and/or take away from society), or those who recognize that each human being has an intrinsic value just because they Exist, because they were made in the image and likeness of God. Mr. Anderson then applies this basic understanding to a number of more specific circumstances.

This is an excellent book to read, and the reflection questions at the end of each chapter help the reader to apply what they have read to their own lives, so that they can verify what is proposed in their own experiences.

Uplifting, Informative and Philosophical

This is the kind of book that I read one chapter a week. There is a frank discussion of philosophy inside and outside the Church followed by very practical tips about things we can do to make our world better.

I enjoy this book and how it encourages me to think critically about society, myself and my reactions. It's a book that makes you feel good about being Christian and about being able to improve your live and how you relate to others.

This isn't a book that I was able to sit down a read cover to cover and I don't think that was the authors intent. It also is not a light read that will make you smile for a few moments before you put it down and forget about it.

It's very easy to be negative about our lives and the world around us. I've always hated those "positive self talk" books, but this book offers away to gradually try to change things instead of complaining about the negative. It is a good read for those who want to see positive change, but aren't really sure how to do it.

A very good synopsis of Catholic teaching on social justice, highlighting the writings of the last two popes, and clearly differentiating Catholics from the secular culture. At times it has an air of preaching to the converted, as much will be relatively familiar to serious Catholics. The chapter titled "A Continent of Baptized Christians" was very illuminating. I had never really though about the commonality of strong Christian tradition in North, Central, and South America, especially compared to modern secular Europe. Unfortunately our Christian brothers to the south are often thought of only in relation to the immigration problem (a familiar theme to many ethnic Catholics)and Mr Anderson really highlights the importance of Hispanic culture for the future of Catholicism. Perhaps our shared spiritual experience can bring us together, rather than building walls and retreating into isolationism.

The world needs to listen to this practical and inspirational message of love and hope for our civilization. Media, especially Hollywood, are leading us down the wrong path. We must abandon greed, violence, immorality and other hedonistic lifestyles and instead be inspired by values of love and peace. During Pope Benedict XVI's recent visit to America, he urged us, the leaders of the free world, to be role models for a revitalized nation of Love, Hope and Peace. Let us pray that we heed these words. This book gives us practical ideas of what real people can do to participate in this goal.
