The translation to get

This review considers the translation ONLY and not the larger question of whether Heidegger is worth reading, a Nazi, too opaque, pretentious, an affront to the the all important Anglo-analytic 'tradition' of philosophy and logic, etc. Joan Stambaugh's translation has an accompanying 'guide' and is more recent than this one. However, as someone who has compared passages from both translations side by side, I can attest that the Macquarrie / Robinson one is much better. Heidegger presents difficult reading, but there are sections in Stambaugh's translation that were absolutely unknowable, at least to me; sections that I read over and over and couldn't make heads or tails of. Now, this earlier translation is still difficult reading. It's still Heidegger; part of his thesis is that many of our most familiar terms and ideas need to be thought through again and interrogated. (Reading Sein und Zeit in German would obviously be ideal, and I do read a little German, but I've never read Heidegger in the original.) If you take a paragraph from this translation and spend some time with it, you will be able to get something out of it, and, I believe, get a decent sense of what Heidegger was saying in the original. I can't say the same for the Stambaugh translation. I could illustrate this easily with quotes from each, but I'm not going to bother. Glad to see this translation available in paperback, but I do miss the original, stark white lettering on black cover. Highly recommended. [By the way, for readers like me always looking for the best available translation, the superiority of this translation of Being and Time is roughly similar to the Scott Moncrieff translation of Proust over the later ones by Lydia Davis, etc... Paragraph by paragraph, it just reads better.]

Excellent Translation - but beware, no translation of the Latin and Greek available!

Excellent translation - MUCH more clear than the original Stambaugh translation (which left me scratching my head much more often). Only thing that could be improved is a translation of the Latin and Greek. Heidegger loves to pepper his writing with ancient aphorisms and sayings, and many times, these concise yet foreign phrases summarize and encapsulate the essence of what he is saying. Ignore them at your peril, it's a lot harder to understand without it.

I ultimately went had to go to my local library and just took a picture of the Latin and Greek glossary from the Stambaugh edition.

Elucidating & Rewardingly Difficult

This is one of the most rigorous and methodically constructed treatises you will find anywhere in philosophy. Heidegger is known for his difficulty, but this book holds an added challenge due to its cumulative dependence. What I mean is, you cannot possibly come to fully grasp the later sections of the book without grasping earlier sections. Every bit of the author's impressive terminology (whether it be a common term imbued with new meaning or a clever neologism) is systematically chosen, introduced, questioned, and developed as the text moves along. If you have never read Heidegger before, expect to reread certain paragraphs at least twice before their meaning begins to dawn on you. If you are persistent, the meaning of his precisely formulated sentences will cause you to perceive the world in entirely new ways. I recommend - at least at first - taking this book in small doses. If you feel your mind wandering at all just stop and go back to it later. If you are looking to scan this book for tidbits of wisdom you will likely be disappointed. Alternately, I would plan on a commitment of at least a few months if you want to glean anything at all from the text.

For those who have read Heidegger before: this book is definitely his magnum opus. Within it he establishes a point of departure for all of his later thought and works. It is also the most engaging and enlightening read you will encounter in his repertoire. Compared to Heidegger's post-kehre writings, you will find the material and style in Being and Time to be far more precise and clear [a very difficult feat indeed considering the elusive nature of the subject matter]. Also, reading this book more than once is a must! Do not be surprised if after the first read you feel as though you are missing something - you probably are.
