Starred Review. Rubin is not an unhappy woman: she has a loving husband, two great kids and a writing career in New York City. Still, she could-and, arguably, should-be happier. Thus, her methodical (and bizarre) happiness project: spend one year achieving careful, measurable goals in different areas of life (marriage, work, parenting, self-fulfillment) and build on them cumulatively, using concrete steps (such as, in January, going to bed earlier, exercising better, getting organized, and "acting more energetic"). By December, she's striving bemusedly to keep increasing happiness in every aspect of her life. The outcome is good, not perfect (in accordance with one of her "Secrets of Adulthood": "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good"), but Rubin's funny, perceptive account is both inspirational and forgiving, and sprinkled with just enough wise tips, concrete advice and timely research (including all those other recent books on happiness) to qualify as self-help. Defying self-help expectations, however, Rubin writes with keen senses of self and narrative, balancing the personal and the universal with a light touch. I've been reading two new non-fiction books a month all year, and each month there is a theme of sorts. This month I read 10% Happier and The Happiness Project. I really enjoyed the Happiness Project (actually, I enjoyed both) which surprised me as I was sure it would be corny and preachy. It was neither. It was simply the story of one person's journey - but with ideas of how you could take or leave parts of that journey for yourself. No "let me fix your life" no "this is the one way to do things" just - this is my experience and I want to share it.

there's definitely some great advice, and unlike some other reviewers

I couldn't even finish this book. Don't get me wrong here; there's definitely some great advice, and unlike some other reviewers, I wasn't put off by her ego or the fact that she is clearly wealthy. I just felt like she took a point that could be made in one or two sentences and stretched it out for pages and pages. Before I finally walked away, I found myself skipping three or four pages at a time because it was all too repetitive. This was a project that should have just stayed in blog form, because there was not enough content for a whole book.

I wanted to be inspired to follow in her footsteps to be happy, but it was a one size doesn't fit all. Great story about her and how she became happy, but wasn't something that I could walk away with my own new perspective. I bought it when I was feeling down, and although happy for her, didn't relate to me very much.

A professional writer she tried to figure out how to make herself happy over the course of a year with each month focusing on one aspect of how to accomplish her goal and easily to follow along. The book is not a scientific project conducted by a group of scientists with extensive information etc and a list of references. It is all about her take on what makes her happy and how she accomplished this over a year. I recommend to anyone who is searching for happiness since there is a lot to learn from her well written descriptions of how she progressed over the year to a happier person.

Very smoothly written, but maybe a little too much emphasis on her own situation, "maybe". Very inspiring and uplifting. I'm not a fan of the "new habit each month", but it is easy to follow and one does not have to limit your own situation to changing only one habit or characteristic per month. I would encourage people who think they are "OK" to read this - and then buy a friend a copy.

full of wonderful ideas and research

The Happiness project reads like a personal development book, a journal and a blog all at once. At the same time it is full of excellent research and references. It is easy to read and inspiring. I can't wait to get started on my Happiness Project.

Con- The author is a highly educated, highly successful, upper middle class, urban dwelling white American female, who does not seem to have a very complicated/challenging upbringing, marriage, or other obviously serious life challenges, so for some people it might be challenging to relate to her. What helps is that she is very candid about her position in life and the fact that she may not be dealing with the most serious challenges and she comes across very authentic which helps take her more seriously. T
hat being said, the book is full of good research and the writing style is easy to read and I believe this book would be beneficial to most readers.
