Gazzaniga gives us a wonderful, thought provoking book which forces the reader to examine complex systems and the ways in which they apply to brain function. Although the book starts out a bit slow, it quickly becomes captivating and difficult to put down.

I not only learned a great deal from this book, I chose to read more of Gazzaniga's works. I recommend his writings to anyone interested in learning more about split-brain effects and complex systems as applied to human psyche.

Free Will & the Brain

One need not be a scientist or widely read in neurology to appreciate and understand this book. Excellently written for a reasonably educated reader. The subject matter is very interesting, fascinating. The author is not making a case for a determinist world in which humans are mere automatons, but does excite the imagination with the revelations in the latest science of neurobiology. My take on it is that we do, in fact make choices based on our moral views, but maybe the choices we make have much to do with our environment, social, political and innate prejudices that have been the result of experience as well as our genetics. But still there remains that teasing question, are we totally free actors in these decisions. And what remains as a poignant question, how much is preprogrammed genetically and how much is actually a completely 'free' willed decision. A little of both?

I am sure that the interested reader will form conclusions different from mine, but the "tease" is there to wonder about. I'll read this one again and probably have an expanded view from the one I now have.
