A Mind of Your Own: The Truth About Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives Hardcover – March 15, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
New York Times bestseller
International bestseller
Named one of the top health and wellness books for 2016 by MindBodyGreen
Depression is not a disease. It is a symptom.
Recent years have seen a shocking increase in antidepressant use the world over, with 1 in 4 women starting their day with medication. These drugs have steadily become the panacea for everything from grief, irritability, panic attacks, to insomnia, PMS, and stress. But the truth is, what women really need can’t be found at a pharmacy.
According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, antidepressants not only overpromise and underdeliver, but their use may permanently disable the body’s self-healing potential. We need a new paradigm: The best way to heal the mind is to heal the whole body.
In this groundbreaking, science-based and holistic approach, Dr. Brogan shatters the mythology conventional medicine has built around the causes and treatment of depression. Based on her expert interpretation of published medical findings, combined with years of experience from her clinical practice, Dr. Brogan illuminates the true cause of depression: it is not simply a chemical imbalance, but a lifestyle crisis that demands a reset. It is a signal that the interconnected systems in the body are out of balance – from blood sugar, to gut health, to thyroid function– and inflammation is at the root.
A Mind of Your Own offers an achievable, step-by-step 30-day action plan—including powerful dietary interventions, targeted nutrient support, detoxification, sleep, and stress reframing techniques—women can use to heal their bodies, alleviate inflammation, and feel like themselves again without a single prescription.
Bold, brave, and revolutionary, A Mind of Your Own takes readers on a journey of self-empowerment for radical transformation that goes far beyond symptom relief.

The Silent Tragedy in Health Care Today
By Kelly Brogan, M.D., Author of A Mind of Your Own.
A silent tragedy in the history of modern health care is happening right now in America, but no one is talking about it. We have been told a story of depression: that it is caused by a chemical imbalance and cured by a chemical fix—a prescription. More than 30 million of us take antidepressants, including one in seven women (one in four women in their forties and fifties). Millions more—maybe you—are tempted to try them to end chronic, unyielding distress, irritability, and feeling emotionally flat—trapped by an exhausting, unshakable inner agitation.
It is time to let go of this false narrative and take a fresh look at where science is leading us. Before you try an antidepressant, I implore you to read this book. And if you do currently take these drugs, then I have an important message for you, too. Let me give you a primer.
Believe it or not:
- In six decades, not a single study has proven that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
- The serotonin theory of depression is a myth that has been supported by the manipulation of data and an echo chamber of industry and media rhetoric.
- Depression is not a genetic disease. It is an epigenetic syndrome. In 2003, a study published in Science suggested that those with genetic variation in their serotonin transporter were three times more likely to be depressed. But six years later this idea was wiped out by a meta-analysis of 14,000 patients published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that denied such an association.
- Depression is often an inflammatory condition, a manifestation of irregularities in the body that can start far away from the brain and are not associated with the simplistic model of so-called 'chemical imbalances'.
- Depression is an opportunity. It is a sign for us to stop and figure out what's causing our imbalance.
The human body interacts in its environment with deep intelligence. Your body creates symptoms for a reason. We usually suppress these symptoms with medication, but that is like turning off the smoke alarm when you have a fire going on.
I get the allure of the quick fix cure via a drug. I used to believe in the magic pill. Then, after my residency and fellowship training, I took a sharp turn.
I have spent years voraciously researching to find better health solutions for women, hungry for the truth about what works and what doesn't. In my research and work with patients—people just like you—I've been analyzing data and connecting the dots.
First we have to ask why you are feeling the way you are feeling, and the sources of your symptoms may surprise you. It may be your food, your gut, your thyroid, or even your go-to pain reliever. I continue to be amazed at the power of the body to heal, after decades of abuse by our lifestyles, within time frames as short as thirty days.
My goal is to:
- Help you change the beliefs we've all been fed by a system that is not really focused on wellness, but on symptom suppression—and profit.
- Help you discover your body's innate ability to recalibrate, reset, and recharge so you can heal.
- Give you simple, highly practical steps in a comprehensive plan that activates your own healing power so you can start feel freer and healthier in thirty days or less.
Because you deserve to experience a mind of your own.

Adding to my review - I stumbled upon the author via Food Babe, a source I find reliable while navigating the food industry. I have always been the type who wants to fully understand why/how things work, which like Food Babe, this author does an incredible job addressing in an educated yet simplified manner for those of us not in medical fields. I gave Dr. Kelly Brogan five stars because regardless of whether it is new or old information overall, I had yet to find one cohesive source for an all encompassing approach to mental, physical and emotional wellness. Do I agree with every detail? No. Some negative reviews of this book harp upon everything they disagree with (vaccine debate, mainly). We are all entitled to our own opinions, and with any information, we have to right to pick and choose what we agree with (thankful for that Liberty). Bashing the author for her thoughts on Amazon seems counterproductive. I find a handful of such reviews comical as they bully the author who is openly discussing depression.
Also wanted to address reviews warning those who are depressed not to take her advice ... As Dr. Kelly Brogan states, everyone's situation is different and unique. If you are currently on anti-depressants, I think it would be wise to read the book thoroughly and then take ideas to your doctor to see what could be altered in your current treatment. I don't think Dr. Kelly Brogan is telling readers to follow her guidelines to a T, instead, she is empowering individuals to question, get involved and become passionate about their health. You could even argue that she is setting the stage for readers to engage in graceful rhetoric and further push medical research to explore connections, new or old, for a more hopeful and healthier tomorrow. She deserves credit for stepping out in a sea full of right fighters. Anytime we open ourselves up to vulnerability like Dr. Kelly Brogan, there is bound to be those tearing away our dignity, especially on the Internet. While I appreciate the honesty of the 1 star reviews, shame on those specifically who clearly prejudged the author and didn't take her words for what they are worth: a conversation starting point for positive lifestyle changes. And to those reviewers who already know everything there is to know about the subject, move on and write your own book instead of negative/hateful Amazon reviews. Just be sure to send a copy to Dr. Brogan so she can leave you an Anazon review. It would likely have the tact and compassion she so generously shares throughout her book.
For reasons you will find obvious after reading just the first chapter of this book, you will never see this book featured or promoted on TV or in the print media.
First of all, this book is the best overview I have read on the impact of the agricultural, pharmaceutical, medical & health industries on our personal health and wellness. While I cannot accurately assess the science described in her book, my personal bias is strongly skewed towards her beliefs. In a nutshell, here are just a few of the important concepts discussed:
- Your body is a remarkable organism which has evolved over millions of years to maintain itself.
- Your body's primary defense mechanism is your immune system which is a complex combination of hormones, chemicals and microscopic organisms (microbiomes) that is constantly guarding you against assaults from the outside world.
- In recent years (literally in most of our lifetimes) our global pharmaceutical industry has learned to fabricate certain chemicals (drugs) that are designed to treat the symptoms of various maladies.
- While some of these drugs have some limited efficacy in treating their target maladies, they all invariably corrupt the ability of the immune system to do its work; just listen to the disclaimer on the next pharma commercial you see on TV.
- The truth is that no one knows the long term consequences of taking most of these drugs over a long period of time.
- This is true even for simple drugs like ibuprofen (Advil) and Tylenol but there is now some evidence that taking multiple of the more potent pharmaceutical products has the ability to literally reprogram your body chemistry to an extent that may be difficult to reverse.
- The explosion in the use of these prescription pharmaceuticals is driven first and foremost by corporate greed in the pharmaceutical, health and medical industries.
- Consumption of GMO foods and processed foods, which contain other non-food chemicals, is also responsible for disruptions in our body chemistry immune system efficiency.
Secondly, the book also describes a 'lifestyle' regimen of diet and exercise which she claims can re-balance your body chemistry. The bad news is that, like any lifestyle change, it is a difficult protocol and requires significant self-discipline over an extended period of time (like, for the rest of your life). The other bad news is that if you are currently on any of the myriad of prescription pharmaceutical drugs currently available out there, you will likely experience a painful withdrawal as part of that regimen.
I have personally embraced a significant portion of that lifestyle and I believe, in a relatively short period of time, it has dramatically improved my personal wellness. So far, this book has literally changed my life...

Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass dieses Buch mit dem Überblick über Alternative Behandlungsansätze der Depression mich sehr inspiriert hat und hoffentlich vielen Menschen nachhaltig helfen kann!
This book consolidates the views she has previously expressed to the public in articles and video presentations: 1) "healthcare" is a misnomer for the system we have inherited: it's really a sickness management system that's not designed to help us regain our health at all but that pretends to be our best hope in order to keep us in its orbit; 2) each of us needs to take responsibility for our own health and learn to trust our own judgment; and 3) because our bodies and our minds are all part of a whole, we can't restore our minds to health without caring for our bodies and our whole selves, as well.
