If you could only read one book and use it as a template for 'Waking Up to your Life', this is the one. Ken's insightful instructions and explanations will provide you will a clear Dharma practice. He has a way of expressing ancient eastern philosophies in a way that the western mind can comprehend. This is not a coffee table book or a quick light read. One could easily spend YEARS working through this wonderful book. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

This is one of the first books about Tibetan Buddhism that I've explored. Having first encountered Buddhism via Zen and more deeply via Theravada teachings, I always thought Tibetan Buddhism to be too baroque for me. But this book makes the wisdom of that path clear and accessible. I appreciate that there are specific meditations to employ to actively work on known issues in one's life. If one has a consistent trigger, basic mindfulness will, over time, continue to soften that trigger. But one can also work with some of these practices to actively engage such areas. I cannot say that I've yet had the time to go deeply into these practices, but just from reading through I can feel how powerful they are.

Mind-opening in its clarity

This book describes a practice that, if followed with integrity, honesty, determination, and wisdom, will lead you to true peace and true happiness. It is not pop psychology, new-age religion, nor feel-good self-help babble. Your path will be difficult, and you will do lots of hard work. But if you stick with it, your results will be amazing. The method is freely available world-wide, and happily taught by experts who probably ask for meager voluntary donations, if anything. The method is adaptable to any individual, because you use its techniques to uncover your own causes of unhappiness, and to remove them from your mind.

This technique was originally pioneered about 2600 years ago, by a man commonly known as "The Buddha". Since then, many strange cultural, mythical, and dogmatic artifacts have been added to "Buddhism". If we could wave a magic wand, and strip them all away, we'd be left with something very much like this book.

Thank you, Ken, for writing straight from the heart of wisdom, and for sharing your hard-won experiences.

McCleod presents the basis of meditation practice and development without the unwieldy and, for me at least, dubitable metaphysics and dogma so often associated with Tibetan Buddhism. What you get is a clear and direct introduction and invitation to the practice of meditation. The work is basic and fundamental. As a 21st century American with a scientific background and the desire to meditate and develop a meditation practice this book is a tremendous guide. Think of it as practice without all the jargon.

This is definitely a book that will remain close at hand as I struggle through my meditation practice (such as it is, or isn't at times!). This guidebook helps to set up a meaningful meditation practice that will achieve results and give direction to the hard work of analysis and finding inner truth.
The author writes clearly and makes difficult mental images come alive. Stephen Batchelor claims that "Ken McLeod's eminently practical manual goes straight to the heart of what the Buddha taught." Becoming fully alive, living joyfully and with compassion are goals that the reader can clearly see being set out and achieved.
But this is hard work. I have read through the book once, but must read each step in the practice to keep on track. I think that this will be a life time endeavor and will, as pointed out in many places, eventually require a teacher.
