Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

If you eat it, you'll find information on it here. This 2001 fifth edition of the popular Nutrition Almanac includes updated nutritional composition of close to 1,000 foods, including 35 different cheeses, 25 legumes, 71 fruits and fruit juices, and 17 cuts of chicken. (Prepared foods are not included.) The tables are in bigger, bolder print than the fourth edition, a great improvement for those of us with aging eyes.

Despite the title, this is not strictly a nutrition resource. Author Lavon Dunne also includes brief overviews of 15 alternative therapies, whether or not they're related to nutrition, with resources for more information. However, Dunne does not list the Web sites for any of the resources--a defect surprising in a 2001 edition. When Nutrition Almanac's first edition appeared in 1973, little was known about the connection between nutrition and disease. In this edition, Dunne lists 68 health conditions, from abscess to vaginitis, and explains how you can prevent or treat the condition through food choices and alternative therapies such as herbs, homeopathy, aromatherapy, Ayurvedic medicine, Chinese medicine, bodywork, and mind-body therapy. --Joan Price

Review

The 5th edition of the Nutrition Almanac brings current a nutrition reference tool first published in 1973, when nutrition resources on this topic were nearly non-existent. Nutrition Almanac quickly became the go-to source for authoritative data on macro- and micronutrients. This most recent edition takes the Almanac in a different direction, perhaps reflecting stronger competition in the nutrition sourcebook arena.

Readers will find the data section, "Diet and Food Composition," still provides the standard information--calories, protein, carbohydrate, and fiber, plus the micronutrient breakdowns per item. Entries are grouped by type of food group (e.g., dairy and eggs, fats and oils, fruits and juices, grains). Other major sections cover nutrients and what each contributes to a healthy body; health conditions and the recommended nutritional responses for addressing each; and an overview of food groups.

New to this edition is a separate section focusing on alternative medicine and therapies (for example, aromatherapy, energy balancing, meditation, and hypotherapy). In addition, alternative-therapy options are interwoven throughout the entries for health conditions... (American Reference Books Annual 2004-03-17)

I'm currently in naturopathy school and this is on of our books we use. It has wonderful information. Unfortunately, I bought this book for my kindle and is extremely hard to navigate using my kindle. It only offers location, not page. The glossary is useless, because you cannot go to what you just looked up. No page or location number. Hopefully whom ever published this book for the e readers makes the change to add page number look up and page number or location in the glossary.

I've started studing nutrition because of the sport activities i've been performing, aiming do improve my results and overall training performance.
Luckly I started by reading this book.
It does not aim sports nutrition, but the very fundamentals of nutrition, with lots and lots of information about every aspect of our bodies and how it reacts with every nutrient.
It helped me a lot with my further readings about the specifics of sports nutrition.
Checking the references it is possible to see the solid base in which this book was written upon..
The tables are awesome. Really awesome. And if you intend to build a good nutritional plan, thus using proper math, the investment will pay itself back hundreds of times.

I bought this book based upon the Amazon reader recommendations I found here. Now I feel obligated to set the record straight.
While parts of this book are thorough, with lots of hard numbers [though it's difficult to figure out what they mean in a practical sense, and the charts are not lined to assist in their reading], it is also riddled with new age foolishness as directly presented as fact as RDA recommendations -- including homeopathy, aroma therapy, etc. The book's organization leaves me with questioning its entire content. It is also not nearly as complete as I might have hoped in listing nutritional content, leaving out more unusual fruits and vegetables, and glossing over different cuts of meat as largely the same.
It also gives far out of date [at least 20 years?] recommendations for treatment of various diseases and maladies. The treatments I'm aware of, again raise questions about the others.
I will continue my search for thorough -- and scientific, a.k.a. proven, not just testimonial and/or based upon one flawed study -- nutrition elsewhere.

Condition was rated as used good - I agree to the point of saying it was in as good a condition when I received it as it would be when and if I had carried it home from the new book store. Tiniest but easily ignored rounding of closed book corners. Thank you to the supplier for a second hand book in almost new condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Must-have Book on Nutrition!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 21, 2018
This book has helped me a lot for the past fourteen months, especially in the area of dealing my hyperactive thyroid and the constantly bleeding haemorrhoids. I didn’t use prescription medication or allow any other medical interventions at all but invented my own nutritional plans using the knowledge gleaned from this book. Those two health problems were a thing of the past now. Good natural nutrition provides the body with sources and resources of what the body requires to keep well and be in good health. Eat well/healthily and give it time, a potentially threatening health problem will eventually go away. I strongly recommend this book to people who want to acquire base knowledge on nutrition and who want eat healthily and have a good healthy well being. An excellent must-have book on Nutrition!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money. This is a PARTIAL copy-paste of John Kirschmann original book
Reviewed in Canada on May 15, 2021
I don't get it. This Kindle book is a PARTIAL copy of the original book by John Kirschmann ( also for sale right here in Amazon). Lavon Dunne appears to have just selectively "copy-paste" a TEENY PORTION of the extensive formation in Kirschmann's much-more-complete book, and is selling to unsuspecting persons here. Example: Kirschmann's book (by the same title) has around 8 paragraphs (a whole page) on Niacin. Dosages, toxcicity, metabolic functions, etc. The same topic by Dunne has less than 6 sentences! The misrepresentation is obvious within 2 minutes of comparing these. It's unfortunate that Kirschmann's much-better-version (the original) is only available in print not Kindle. But that's no reason to buy this Dunne version -- an absolute waste of money, and will only give you maybe 1/20th (one-twentieth!) of the info by the same book title to Kirschmann. To wrap it, I immediately applied for a refund to Amazon for this Kindle Dunne book. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK-- There, I've done by civic good deed for the day - to shout the alarm about this misrepresented book by Dunne.
