About the Author

Evi Nemeth has retired from the Computer Science faculty at the University of Colorado. She is currently exploring the Pacific on her 40-foot sailboat named Wonderland. Garth Snyder has worked at NeXT and Sun and holds a BS in Engineering from Swarthmore College and an MD and an MBA from the University of Rochester. Trent R. Hein is the co-founder of Applied Trust, a company that provides IT infrastructure consulting services. Trent holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. Ben Whaley is the Director of Enterprise Architecture at Applied Trust. Ben earned a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. He is an expert in storage management, virtualization, and web infrastructure.

Best Linux/UNIX Book I've Read. Ever.

There's a reason this book receives glowing reviews, and it doesn't have much to do with what's in it. It has to do with what's not in it.

I am so accustomed to really miserable, overly verbose tech writing by people who are clearly not good writers that finding this book blew me away. In an era of disposable and free blog writing, I forgot how good tech writing can be. We need more writing like this. I bought the paperback and the Kindle edition. First time, ever, that I bought a book twice. When they come out with a new edition, I'll buy that one, too. Another first.

Tech book publishers, take note of why this book works:

- There aren't equally-weighted discussions about every single option available.
- There's not a lot of BS filler.
- There's historical context which aids in memorization. Stories teach.
- There's a lot of "do this, here's why" aka "best practices".
- There aren't pages and pages of useless code that nobody cares about.
- There are no gimmicks (free CD/DVDs and the like) attached to the book.
- The writing style assumes you are busy and treats your time as valuable.

In this book is practical wisdom and tested/tried techniques to get you started on most things you will do as an admin. The authors know you have Google, and they don't kill you wasting your time. They give you a description of the technology, the most appropriate way(s) to handle it (with syntax), how to think about it, and how it differs (if it differs) between versions of Linux/UNIX.

Good overview

This book gives a good and comprehensive overview of the Unix systems and systems management, but if you only need to manage one or a few Linux computers e.g. for scientific computing then a lot of the material is not relevant, like networking, mail etc. The book covers several flavors of Unix, including Linux, Solaris, AIX etc so if you only need Linux there is also some material you don't need, but of course if you have several different systems that would be pretty useful. The book is well written, in a conversational style and easy to follow, and gives a good overview. It is not that good as a reference source, say if you need to do a specific task or figure our the options to the mount command, or the correct syntax for awk, for example. All in all, it is a good book, but I think I will need another Linux reference book with a little more detail in some areas.

Incredible Overview and Detailed run-through for Linux Admins, Users as well

I'm a programmer who has recently started working in Linux environments and also tried my hand at setting up a Linux server. I'm a Googler...meaning, I can't remember the last time I bought a book for learning how to do things on computers - it's been 5-10 years since I bought my last technical manual. Well, the problem I had is that Linux help is all over the board - I found myself searching for help wayyyyyyy too often, and typically coming up with solutions that didn't really sit well with me - they all felt hacked or half-baked. After purchasing this book, I have a much clearer understanding of so much more than what I was looking for. From an overall system perspective down to the nuts and bolts, this book is pure gold. I haven't read the whole book as many of the chapters are extremely specific to what you're trying to accomplish, but I did read all the chapters on scripting and the general administrative view of Linux - you'd be amazed at how much clearer the waters will be after you get this information in your head. Commands that always looked foreign to me now make sense. Also, permissions in Linux are FINALLY presented in a clear and fairly concise form. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is overwhelmed with the sheer lack of quality information regarding "why" or understandable "how to" for Linux. No more RTFM's that you see scattered all over the web from Linux users.

Excellent Reference Book for System Administrators

When I was a Unix systems admin in the 90's, the Evi Nemeth, et al. Administration Handbooks were a must have. Our site recently decide to port a few applications to RHEL and we didn't purchase professional services for OS support. Since I had Unix on my resume I was volunteered to install/configure the servers. I happy to find out they are still making the Administrator Handbook and it was as useful as ever. For Linux/Unix administrators this, this really is a must-have book. I will mention that this is not an introduction to Linux/Unix for users, this covers all aspects of administration.

Authoritative book...

My previous Linux book dated to 1995, so it was long overdue for replacement. I selected this one on the basis of its publication date, hoping it would have material on the various distributions that have appeared in the meantime. This expectation was largely but not completely fulfilled, hence the 4/5 rating. At the moment, I am using Ubuntu 11.10, and it is somewhat different than previous editions. Nevertheless, I have found this book to be much more helpful than one supposedly devoted specifically to Ubuntu 11.10 which I have reviewed elsewhere in this forum. This is a good, solid, meaty book that will help a linux user find the way through the forest.
