I've used this book in my human factors grad/undergrad class for 4 years. This book is the only text in human factors with information from research in cognitive science, and a cognitive science perspective on human error. The book is weaker on the ergonomics and design side, and quite weak on social aspects of human factors. I use the book in combination with Don Norman's book and the Casey book of case studies.

I do not require students to memorize the book. They use it as a reference for doing problem solving and case analyses. It contains good research references and many important facts and figures that human factors and design professionals need.

It's a textbook & it's fine as that apart from the physical quality.
However, one thing I wanted to note was that the edition of the book received was not the one listed.
I ordered used through amazon and was surprised to receive the Eastern Economy Edition. It is a reprint by PHI Learning Private Limited (not Pearson as listed) in India. It specifically states on the back of the book and the copyright page "For sale in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and SriLanka only." I'm in the US. I imagine as a book it's probably pretty much the same.
I don't know if it is different in content or physical quality. The pages, however, are very see through and I find it makes reading it a bit difficult as the back of the page and the next page both show through quite a bit. I don't know if this is the case with the original edition.

I am rather split on how to objectively assess this book. I will declare out right that I am studying a PhD in a very specific topic area of human factors psychology which could be clouding my judgment.

Verdict: Cannot recommend.

Positives: The text is very simple to read. When elaborate explanations in other textbooks have absolutely bewildered me beyond any hope of understanding - Introduction to Human Factors Engineering has provided a very useful tool to refer to. It explains a very broad range of concepts with simple and intuitive examples which certainly make a dense field very accessible.

It covers a wide range of topics from visual system, auditory systems and cognition to work physiology, stress and even training. If you are new to the field and are very uncertain of what area you might be interested in or if you need this book for a generalist course - it certainly covers a lot.

Negatives: The book has a very "Jack of all trades, Master of none" feel to it. Certain topic areas in it feel barely touched and the wikipedia pages told me substantially more. For instance, despite the abundance of research into prospective memory in the past decade; the most recent reference regarding prospective memory in the text is 1999.

In fact, despite it apparently being published in 2013, it appears it has actually had no updating since the 2004 edition. Given the rate of development in computing and psychological science since then, the decade long lag is very very noticeable. For anyone looking for a primer, this is certainly not the book to look for.

If I am going to get picky, the build quality of the book is also subpar with what I would expect for the price.

My very first human factors course used this textbook, and it does an excellent job introducing and instilling the basics. It inspired me to pursue a human factors career, eight years later cumulating in a Ph.D. I now work in human-centered hardware design and find this the resource I go to most frequently to look up fundamental human factors principles. Each chapter also includes a list of resources cited in the text that I consult for more in-depth information on the wide array of topics this text covers.

There are some chapters and segments in this book that must be written by a different author, because they are actually easy to read and understand. The majority of this book, however, is poorly written and even more poorly illustrated.

I'm sorry, but if your topic of discussion is human factors engineering, which focuses on the clear and succinct display of information, I fully expect the book to exist as a paragon of those concepts. Or at least above-average? Hands-down the worst text I've read in recent memory. I'm just about halfway through my semester, and desperately wishing that there was an alternative textbook for this class. I've never come across a text that is this cumbersome.

This is a good text to use for an introduction to the many facets of human factors engineering. I used this book to prepare for my written and oral examinations in my PhD program.

Solid text for use in discussions pertaining to human factors and training.

This book is the most informative introduction to HF that I've seen. This book is a rather easy read and provides LOTS of references to additional sources for those that want to a deeper dive into the topics.

The book binding cracked as soon as I opened the book, so now I have two halves of the book itself. I can still read it, but with a broken binding, I'm going to have pages flying around when it starts to peel from the broken binding.
