Perhaps the greatest first-hand account of polar exploration.
In his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, Apsley Cherry-Garrard states that "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised." This is his gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong.
One of the youngest members of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied him on the final push to the Pole. Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment, supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other explorers.
Summing up the reasons for writing the book, Cherry-Garrard says:
"To me, and perhaps to you, the interest in this story is the men, and it is the spirit of the men, "the response of the spirit," which is interesting rather than what they did or failed to do: except in a superficial sense, they never failed... It is a story about human minds with all kinds of ideas and questions involved, which stretch beyond the furthest horizons."

Something was seriously wrong.

This book was surely written by a beautiful person. At the time of the second Scott expedition to Antarctica, this person was young, loyal, hard working, sensitive to beauty, attentive to the best in every person, courageous, and very near-sighted..

The loveliness of this man makes me angry at Scott and his right-hand men (like the scientist Wilson). I can't help but feel that there was something seriously wrong about the Scott expedition. The author at maybse 25 - 27 years accompanied Wilson and Bowers, another right-hand man, on the "worst journey" of the book's title. This was a six week trek over ice in the middle of winter in the total darkness with temperatures that descended to -73 degrees F. in order to --- collect the eggs of Emperor Penguin's. During the journey, the author could not wear his eyeglasses. He starved. With the two others, he had to despair. The nerves of his teeth were killed by the frost. At one point, Wilson told him, "You simply must learn to use an ice ax". Plainly our author may not have been trained or able to see. Yet, throughout the author looks up to Wilson, whereas it seems to me that Wilson was a somewhat crazed and obssessed man without a true regard for his fellows.

An expedition that would have sent three men into the unknown in the most frightful season in the most frightful unknown place was stupid and cruel. No concepts of duty or advancement of science can excuse the entire incompetence and carelessness. I suppose the expedition was systematized only by a sense of honor and manliness.

There was something wrong about the Scott expedition. From this book, it struck me as old-fashioned or rigid in values, too loose in organization, too diffuse in its goals, too classist. As to the latter two, the author tells us that the expedition was primarily scientific. If so, the journey to the Pole was not necessary as science could have been satisfied by a concentration of resources that the Polar journey diluted. Additionally, the author here would perhaps not have had to take the worst journey and another group of researchers would not have been stranded for a whole winter (!) on their own while Scott went to the Pole. As to may remark about classism, I am struck with the disregard, almost contempt, in which the ordinary seaman Edgar Evans is discussed or ignored, and the honor heaped on Oates of the cavalry or dragoons ---- as if both men as they died had not given their total "vitality", as the author might say, to the Polar journey.

I will read more about the author. I understand that a biography of him has recently been published (?). I would like to know what happened to him as I sense that he essentially knew that he was in the hands of the unorganized, to say the least, and the obssessive, to say the most.

Inspiring true story of incredible personal sacrifice, all for the cause of science.

Modern readers should pause and think about the dedication to science that was displayed by this team.

An incredible story when you realize how inadequate their equipment was. Nothing was aluminum; it did not exist then as an economically viable material for camping/climbing/skiing/hiking. No fiberglass; no plastic; no breathable fabric. They had no hoods on their coats. No ski goggles. You cannot really use a magnetic compass; the needle never settles and the South magnetic pole is over your right shoulder.

The book is probably better if you have good detailed maps of the place. I have been there and experienced the summer temperatures, white outs, and blizzards, but not to the Pole. I am familiar with the places mentioned in the story and have been inside the hut at Hut Point. So I did not need the maps. I suppose you could find good maps on the Internet. It is also probably a better read if you have some experience with camping and hiking in winter or with winter sports like skiing and understand what it feels like when the food or the gear gets messed up at the end of a long hard day.

The writer tells it like it is. Don't read this if you will be upset about bad things happening to horses. The people in the story understood horses well and it is clear they cared about them as individual animals. There are multiple places where they risked their lives to save one of the horses, simply because they cared about the animal, not because it was a resource. On the other hand, Antarctica is no place for a horse.

One of the best books you'll ever read

There is absolutely no book like this in the annals of exploration/survival literature--and few books that approach it in any other genre. Apsley Cherry-Garrard was part of Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated quest for the South Pole, but his book is no catalogue of derring-do and manly exploits. It is instead a memoir of suffering, exhiliration, and disaster, told with lyrical depth and near-heartrending honesty. Never does Cherry-Garrard descend into self-pity; instead he writes with a vividness that brings his ordeal--and the beauty that he nonetheless bore witness to--alive almost between the lines. This is the work of a poet, a classical writer and thinker, as well as an explorer. It is a testament not only to the circumstances Cherry-Garrard survived, but to the framework of British culture that surrounded them. It is a literary masterpiece, one of my all-time favorite books, and deserving of a place on any shelf devoted to serious literature.
