Like Machiavelli's The Prince and the Japanese Book of Five Rings, Sun Tzu's The Art of War is as timely for business people today as it was for military strategists in ancient China. Written in China more than 2,000 years ago, Sun Tzu's classic The Art of War is the first known study of the planning and conduct of military operations. These terse, aphoristic essays are unsurpassed in comprehensiveness and depth of understanding, examining not only battlefield maneuvers, but also relevant economic, political, and psychological factors. Indeed, the precepts outlined by Sun Tzu regularly applied outside the realm of military theory. It is read avidly by Japanese businessmen and was touted in the movie Wall Street as the corporate raider's bible.

Providing a much-needed translation of this classic, Samuel Griffith has made this powerful and unique work even more relevant to the modern world. Including an explanatory introduction and selected commentaries on the work, this edition makes Sun Tzu's timeless classic perfectly accessible to modern readers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Art of War is among the greatest classics of military literature ever written. Sun Tzu warfare is as applicable today as when the book was written some 2,500 years ago....Pick up The Art of War and read it."--General A.M. Gray, Marine Corps Gazette

"As a reflection of the Chinese mind, this little work is as relevant as any Confucian classic."--The Times (London)

"A brief tract on strategy that has been admired in China for centuries. Some of Mao Tse Tung's most eloquent thoughts are merely rehashes of Sun Tzu and his interpreters."--The Los Angeles Herald Examiner

"Samuel Griffith's original and scholarly translation of The Art of War shows how good scholarship can make an easily readable translation that is much more useful to modern readers."--The Philadelphia Inquirer

This English translation of this classic work by Sun Tzu is certainly an excellent one in that in addition to providing the original 13 "Chapters" of the original work it also provides the reader with considerable background that places this work in its proper context. It also provides commentary on specific portions of each chapter by Chinese scholars of Sun Tzu. All in all, the late Samuel B. Griffith has produced one of the more complete and carefully organized versions of, "The Art of War." Any serious student of this classic work will find Griffith's work an excellent resource.

The written Chinese language is ideographic not phonetic and consists of thousands of pictographic characters whose meanings often depend on how they are arranged and combined into compounds. Further, Chinese doe not employ Western style punctuation so it takes a good deal of skill and knowledge for a Western to know where to break Chinese texts into sentences and paragraphs. Griffith appears to have done an excellent job in translating the Sun Tzu texts into something understandable by an English reader.

Yet understanding the statements of Sun Tzu much less applying them to current situations requires that the reader be willing to actually exercise critical and contextual analysis to really understand the concepts that Sun Tzu was presenting. Griffith clearly understood this which is why he made sure to provide the historical context in which "The Art of War" was written. If the reader is not willing to make this sort of mental commitment, but simply wishes to be able to drop an occasional quote from Sun Tzu then it doesn't really matter which of the numerous versions of this work that is available is purchased.

A final note if the reader of this work by Griffith is able to read Chinese, then as a supplement to this fine book, a book containing the 13 Chapters presented in modern Chinese Characters would be useful. "The Art of Strategy" by R. L. Wing is one example of such a book offering the reader a split text of Chines eand English.

Art of War in general
Sun tzu's work is classic. Anyone interested in war, business, human conflict, strategy, politics or philosophy should read this book.
This book was written in 500BC in ancient China (before it was actually china) and is the first known written work to logically analyze the anomaly of war. In the first sentence of the work, it declares war is a recurring theme in man's world and that it must be studdied. Sun Tzu sees war, not as a temporary thing, but a constant threat. He also recognizes battle and war as a fluid, dynamic situation that is constantly changing. As can be seen in the following passage -
"Now an army may be likened to water, for just as flowing water avoids the heights and hastens to the lowlands, so an army avoids strength and attacks weakness. As water shapes its flow in accordance to the ground, so an army manages its victory in accordance with the situation of the enemy. As water has no constant form, there are no constant conditions in war."
His concepts are simple, but deep at the same time. Attack weakness, retreat from strength. Do the opposite of what your enemy thinks you will do. Fool your enemy into doing what you want him to. A famous quote from the book is "a great general attacks an already defeated army".
The great thing about this book is that it is so consice, yet open. The concepts of the work are very consice and easy to read yet they are broad enough to be open to interpretation through a variety of alternate perspectives. For instance the concepts can easily be applied to business, or to person to person relationships, in fact they can be applied to almost anything that involves human conflict.
One can only wish that GW Bush had such insight as is seen in the following passage:
"if not in the interests of the state, do not act. If you cannot succeed do not use troops. If you are not in danger, do not fight. A sovereign cannot raise an army because he is enraged, nor can a general fight because he is resentful. For while an angered man may again be happy, and a resentful man again be pleased, a state that has perished cannot be restored, nor can the dead be brought back to life."
This version of the Art of War:
I found this version (by Samuel Griffith) to be very good. It included biographical information, background info, related works, and information on the translation. Im not sure how many translations there have been of the AOW, but this seems a very good one. I would definatley reccomend this book to anyone interested in such things.

I didn't like it too much . . . then I realized I was reading the 50 page introduction. As soon as the translation began, it was game on non-stop reading. It's a great book. It's knowledge that most people, sadly, dismiss today. The first 50 pages is basically general history of the past and how armies were. It's actually great to know because it gets you into that ancient mood of learning ancient knowledge.

Absolutely worth the price. Makes a great gift and if you're reading it in public, sometimes you'll get like a surprised or satisfied look.
