A History of the Twentieth Century in 100 Maps Hardcover – October 22, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
As Bryars and Harper reveal, maps make ideal narrators, and the maps in this book tell the story of the 1900s―which saw two world wars, the Great Depression, the Swinging Sixties, the Cold War, feminism, leisure, and the Internet. Several of the maps have already gained recognition for their historical significance―for example, Harry Beck’s iconic London Underground map―but the majority of maps on these pages have rarely, if ever, been seen in print since they first appeared. There are maps that were printed on handkerchiefs and on the endpapers of books; maps that were used in advertising or propaganda; maps that were strictly official and those that were entirely commercial; maps that were printed by the thousand, and highly specialist maps issued in editions of just a few dozen; maps that were envisaged as permanent keepsakes of major events, and maps that were relevant for a matter of hours or days.
As much a pleasure to view as it is to read, A History of the Twentieth Century in 100 Maps celebrates the visual variety of twentieth century maps and the hilarious, shocking, or poignant narratives of the individuals and institutions caught up in their production and use.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2014I'm rather ashamed to say that I bought this book as a gift for a friend and have ended up keeping it for myself. I was impressed by how many different aspects of 20th century history can be explored through maps. A century shaped by war and empire, here we find maps carried in the trenches or pasted up as propaganda posters. There is also good coverage of transport: early Tube maps, maps from the golden age of railway travel or the first package holidays. These were my favourites. But there are many surprises, too - maps covering drug use and immigration, maps of imaginary places such as Tolkien's Middle Earth, maps covering football and the Beatles' Liverpool. Maps really do get everywhere. Visually striking, very readable, funny and shocking in turn. I would have liked a little bit more commentary - but I guess there are space and design restrictions with coffee-table/gift books. I hope these guys have future volumes in the planning. I certainly think it would make a great resource for teachers of History in schools. In short: lots I didn't know or hadn't thought about. It would make a great present. Okay, I'll buy another copy for my friend...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2015An interesting and instructive book, but one that falls short of what I was hoping for, on two counts. First, as noted by another reviewer, the maps are too small. Some of that reflects the fact that I am an older person with older eyes, but even when I put on 3X glasses and used a magnifying glass there were many maps where I missed a lot of detail. There are reasons why many atlases are oversized. Second, also as noted by another reviewer, this is definitely the 20th century as seen from Britain. There are some maps of areas outside the British Isles (several of which deal with former colonies) but the focus is resolutely British. For map freaks like me, the book is well worth having, but I really wish that it had been larger scale -- in both senses of the word.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2014I have never had an interest in maps until I met Tim Bryars. After accidentally stumbling into his little shop, while on holiday in London, he captivated me with his knowledge and enthusiasm, and I have been a fan ever since. "A History of the 20th Century in 100 Maps" is a beautiful collection of historical events chronologically arranged. The subjects are diverse and range from the troop positions in 1915 Gallipoli to a 1995 map showing internet traffic across the globe. It is rich in history, but also visually stunning. It is filled with information and fascinating facts, which I didn't even know I was interested in. Each page is concise, but filled with enough information to peak your interest and look into the topic in more detail. I honestly feel like I have a little piece of Tim talking to me on every page. If you want to buy a gift for someone and don't know what they like, I recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2015This book has a compelling title. But wait, It might better be titled,"History of Twentieth century England in 100 maps." There are fantasy maps such as "Christopher Robin's 100 akers," transit maps, such as the London Underground, or perhaps a "Royal Tour"map, and many more of possible interest to antiquarians. But not me, I am a geographer.
One star for deceptive presentation.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2015The text is very interesting....the maps would be interesting too, if one could actually SEE them. This book needs to be in a much larger format to fully realize its potential. Can't gripe about the price, but I'd pay more for larger maps.

KirkyReviewed in the United Kingdom on October 15, 20204.0 out of 5 stars Authoritative and novel tome
Very authoritatively researched and written with tremendous variety in the maps presented. A novel book, to be sure. As other reviewers say, the focus in on UK maps but that's fine with me as that's what I'm most interested in anyway. Also, some maps are hard to see in detail because of the unavoidable limitation of presenting them in a book, albeit a sizeable one. Quite a heavy lift in bed!
Anne CooperReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 3, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Great present for the book worm!
Looks brilliant- its a Christmas present but I will make sure I can read it
CharlieReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 20143.0 out of 5 stars Buy with a magnifying glass
Beautiful book, clearly well researched. The only thing that really lets it down is that you can't read the finer and more interesting detail of the maps without a magnifying glass - they missed a bit of a trick here - the book should have been bigger in dimension, or the maps bigger on the pages. I would still recommend it, but I suggest you buy it along with a magnifying glass so you can enjoy the maps.
