Excellent signal to noise ratio for an anthology

I read this to consider it as a possible text for a college course on robots & AI in law and society. I'll almost certainly use it as a required text. The articles are well-chosen, offering several points of view on each main topic (military uses, care-givers, sex and companionship, etc.). With only one or two exceptions out of 22 chapters, the pieces are relatively jargon-free compared to usual academic philosophy; I expect they'll be challenging but accessible to undergraduates. Each topic gets roughly 50 pages (3 articles) -- so the book's organization is very thoughtfully arranged for weekly assignments, or for dipping into as an afternoon's café reading.

Two topics somewhat absent from this volume are self-driving vehicles and strong AI, but those get more attention in "Robot Ethics 2.0: From Autonomous Cars to Artificial Intelligence" (2017). While that work comes from a different publisher, it shares 2 out of 3 editors with this one. Aside from the companion/care-giver issue, which is the topic of several articles in "2.0," the two collections tend more to supplement than overlap each other. So don't be misled into thinking that this collection is obsolete -- the 2017 collection is more like a Volume 2 than a true 2.0. (However, both volumes are relatively "micro" in their orientation -- neither one discusses more "macro" social issues such as the ethics of using robots to displace human workers.)

One semi-prerequisite, though: it would help to have a little bit of background knowledge about some major schools of ethics -- esp. utilitarianism, consequentialism, deontology and virtue ethics. The review in this book is very abbreviated, and many authors assume you know what those things are. I plan to spend roughly 2-3 hours of instruction on this before having students dive into this book; you almost certainly could pick up enough background from poking around in Wikipedia and the online Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy for a comparably brief time. (Of course, reading a short book on the subject, like Torbjörn Tännsjö's "Understanding Ethics (2nd ed.)" or Simon Blackburn's "Ethics: A Very Short Introduction", won't exactly kill you, either.)

All in all, a very strong recommend for readers interested in robots, and readers interested in applied ethics generally.

Higly readable coverage of an area of great current interest

I wouldn't be aware of this book had I not served as a reader on a dissertation in the area of robot ethics. To an non-expert in the immediate field it provides what well-rounded coverage. It is surprisingly easy to read; only a couple of chapters come across as a little dry. As I went through it, I noted Blay Whitby's Chapter 15 as particularly strong; Steve Petersen's Chapter 18 as quite brilliant; Rob Sparrow's Chapter 19 as particularly interesting philosophically; and Anthony Beavers's Chapter 21 as a great discussion of whether it will be sufficient for robots merely to perform as thinking and caring entities while actually being neither in any real sense.

This collection of essays is perfect for beginning to look into some of the ethical dilemmas that we face right now in regards to emerging and future technologies, especially in regards to machine learning-abled robotics in a variety of fields. This book covers several - medical, war, care, social, as well as some theoretical work.

Most helpful book I've read as novice in the field

This book actually changed my view of whether or not robots will some day become thinking machines and, more interestingly, regardless whether or not they actually do care about us whether we should treat them with some modicum of respect as if they did. If you want to begin to think seriously about Robot Ethics, this is the perfect place to begin. It would also work well as a text book in an ethics class.
