For the first time, all the major works of this beloved writer are gathered together in one hardcover volume.

Poet, artist, and mystic, Kahlil Gibran was born in 1883 to a poor Christian family in Lebanon and immigrated to the United States as an adolescent. His masterpiece, The Prophet, a book of poetic essays that he began while still a youth in Lebanon, is one of the most cherished books of our time and has sold millions of copies in more than twenty languages since its publication in 1923. But all of Gibran’s works—essays, stories, parables, and prose poems—are imbued with equally powerful simplicity and wisdom, whether they are addressing marriage or children, friendship or grief, work or pleasure. Perhaps no other twentieth-century writer has touched the hearts and minds of so remarkably varied and widespread a readership.

Included in this volume are The Prophet, The Wanderer, Jesus the Son of Man, A Tear and a Smile, Spirits Rebellious, Nymphs of the Valley, Prose Poems, The Garden of the Prophet, The Earth Gods, Sand and Foam, The Forerunner, and The Madman.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“[Kahlil Gibran] speaks about fundamental things—those which are, or should be, a part of every human life—love, giving, food and drink, work, sorrow and joy, children, clothes and housing, buying and selling, crime and punishment, freedom, reason and passion, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion and death . . . Like most wisdom, most of what he has to tell is ancient, the possession of all men who have thought much and hard about fundamental things . . . But on it all there is also the imprint of a rich and unusual personality . . . Gibran offers no short-cuts to happiness, no easily mastered formulae for successful living. Essentially, he bids you look closely into your own heart and mind.”

—NEW YORK TIMES

About the Author

Kahlil Gibran was born in 1883 in Lebanon and died in New York in 1931. His family emigrated to the United States in 1895. In his early teens, the artistry of Gibran's drawings caught the eye of his teachers and he was introduced to the avant-garde Boston artist, photographer, and publisher Fred Holland Day, who encouraged and supported Gibran in his creative endeavors. A publisher used some of Gibran's drawings for book covers in 1898, and Gibran held his first art exhibition in 1904 in Boston. In 1908, Gibran went to study art with Auguste Rodin in Paris for two years. He later studied art in Boston. While most of Gibran's early writing was in Arabic, most of his work published after 1918 was in English. Gibran's best-known work is The Prophet, a book composed of 26 poetic essays.

Kahlil Gibran: full Arabic name Gibran Khalil Gibran, (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer of the New York Pen League.

Kahlil Gibran was born in the town of Bsharri in the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, Ottoman Empire (north of modern-day Lebanon), to Khalil Gibran and Kamila Gibran(Rahmeh). As a young man Kahlil emigrated with his family to the United States, where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in English and Arabic. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.

He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Laozi.

I wanted something new in my life and randomly ordered this book. I had heard of the name Kahlil Gibran before but knew nothing about him.

I'm only a few pages in and these parables are so charming and beautiful and fun and although "instructive" in some sense somehow still unassuming.

I'm so thankful to be able to get this book so cheap and for this author. The book itself is a nice hardcover with an elegant design with soft yet unyielding pages. Perfect size for me too.

Absolutely wonderful classic stories and poems, something to ponder and lift the spirit. I purchased the classic hardcover and it seems to be well made, the same quality book found on grandpa’s bookcase. I’ve introduced Kahlil Gibran to other and they’ve become hooked on this classic writers style as well. I highly recommend Kahlil Gibran, The Collected Works (hardcover), you may find yourself reaching for this book of inspiration more than you expected.

"The Collected Works" is a compilation of many of Khalil Gibran's most prolific works. Contained herein:

The Madman
The Forerunner
The Prophet
Sand and Foam
Jesus the Son of Man
Earth Gods
The Wanderer
The Garden of the Prophet
Prose Poems
Spirits Rebellious
Nymphs of the Valley
A Tear and a Smile

I am particularly fond of "Sand and Foam", which is a book of aphorisms, and "Jesus the Son of Man", which is a book filled with stories from the perspective of people in Jesus' life.

I chanced upon this book while browsing the "Poetry" section at a local, big-chain, bookstore. After reading the line, "I am the silver threads the gods cast down from the heights, and Nature takes me to adorn the valleys" (song of the rain), I decided that I had to own this book, even though I already owned several of the books contained within it.

When I ordered this book, I also ordered "The Forerunner", not knowing that it would be included within. I wish that someone had posted the table of contents for me, so that I wouldn't have spent the extra money.

If you love any of Khalil Gibran's writings, this book is a wonderful addition to your library.

I simply love this book. I found the writing beautiful and profound. I probably wouldn't recommend it to everyone but if you like beautiful writing and have a rebellious side and don't mind the talk of God. Great book. If you are closed minded. Not the best. It's a book of fables , short stories, poetry, and aphorisms. One of my favourites, two infants.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor proofreading, if any.

I'm not talking about Gibran works, that is out of my league. I am talking about the digital edition (kindle book) of General Press. Not even at 6% of the book and already found 2 gross errors, <<heard>> instead of <<heart>> and <<though>> instead of <<through>>. Being not a native speaker my guess is that there were a bunch of more "sutile" errors which was not able to catch and they simply twisted my understanding of Gibran poetry. So this digital material lacks of proofreading. You are warned.
