The award-winning author of Waiting and War Trash returns to his homeland in a searing new novel that unfurls during one of the darkest moments of the twentieth century: the Rape of Nanjing.

In 1937, with the Japanese poised to invade Nanjing, Minnie Vautrin—an American missionary and the dean of Jinling Women’s College—decides to remain at the school, convinced that her American citizenship will help her safeguard the welfare of the Chinese men and women who work there. She is painfully mistaken. In the aftermath of the invasion, the school becomes a refugee camp for more than ten thousand homeless women and children, and Vautrin must struggle, day after day, to intercede on behalf of the hapless victims. Even when order and civility are eventually restored, Vautrin remains deeply embattled, and she is haunted by the lives she could not save.

With extraordinarily evocative precision, Ha Jin re-creates the terror, the harrowing deprivations, and the menace of unexpected violence that defined life in Nanjing during the occupation. In Minnie Vautrin he has given us an indelible portrait of a woman whose convictions and bravery prove, in the end, to be no match for the maelstrom of history.

At once epic and intimate,
Nanjing Requiem is historical fiction at its most resonant.

Another amazing, hard hitting book written about the period of Japan's occupation of China and the atrocities which occured when the Japanese army overtook Nanjing. I had previously read, "The Rape of Nanking," so knew something of the events. This book goes into detail at the women's university in the safety zone where both foreigners and nationals worked tirelessly to help mainly the women and children of Nanking, but also the young men whom they loved so much. It becomes clear that the difficulty with turning away those who must make room for people more in need is torturous for aid workers, and has a lasting effect. This book is written beautifully and brings to light a very difficult subject through the dignity of those who lived through that time and can shed light on what happened.

Ha Jin is always powerful and eloquent, but this work, novelized from abundant historical materials, is a little stilted. The story, though, is overwhelming. Read with Iris Chang's The Nanjing Massacre.

Nanjing Requiem takes place during the invasion of China by Japan, more specifically the rape of the then capital Nankin (Nanjing). The Japanese committed atrocities and killed hundreds of soldiers and civilians, which to this day they do not fully recognise. During the siege of Nankin, a number of foreigners, mainly Americans, who had decided to stay, created neutral zones to protect civilians, in particular children and women. Naning Requiem relates the story of such a foreigner, Minnie Vautrin, an American citizen who worked as the Principal of a college. The story is told by one of her colleagues, a Chinese woman, and provides an interesting view on Vautrin's actions. This book is actually more a detailed report than historical fiction and therefore lacks some of the power it could have had. Life and difficulties in times of war are well described, but the characterisation lacks strength. As a consequence, it is hard to emphasise with them, and even the atrocities committed by the Japanese lose impact. I however enjoyed reading this novel. It is well written, and is about a piece of history too often forgotten.

Heartbreaking but gripping true story of WW2. Relevant for scholars of American and Chinese history alike, as well as generally being a good read for anyone interested in the complex relationship between the two countries on a more person-to-person level, or generally interested in learning more about the tragedies of WW2. If you liked Schindler's List, you will like this novel.

This was the first time I have read Ha Jin. I had heard him on an interview with Diane Rehm and was anticipating a good read. Unfortunately, Nanjing Requiem was a vast disappointment. I have been slogging through the book quite slowly, putting it down at any and every opportunity. I am having a hard time understanding why the author chose to portray such a horrendous human tragedy with so little emotion and in such a detached manner. The writing is wooden and disorganized. The dialogue is particularly weak. The use of slang is awkward. I keep imagining how much better this book might have been with a more impassioned, engaged voice. On the Rehm interview, Ha Jin said that he had stopped writing this book twice before finishing it -- that he had failed at getting it right at first. Sadly, I'd say that he never got it right.

I have never been disappointed by any of Ha Jin's books and Nanjing Requiem is no exception. It's a compelling novel about foreigners running a school in China when it was invaded by Japan. It's a totally unique prospective about living through a time of war.

Liked the way the author told the story from a participant point of view. The book was easy to read and understand. The historical facts were true. The main character could have been stronger in her convictions.

Heart breaking and enlightening: a novel about a historical event with real characters woven into the narrative. I loved the direct style but this method of mixing fiction with historical reality can fool the reader into thinking it's biographical and accurate which is something to guard against. Brilliant book about a terrible time in China's history
