Engaging and insightful read

I greatly enjoyed the main character. It reads more as an inner monologue than a novel - almost at times like an essay or even a lecture, which makes sense, given the narrator's profession. Other characters are primarily props in his lesson - introduced for a purpose then dismissed when that purpose has been fulfilled. The narrator's discussion and reflections on sexual relationships and interactions between men and women are superb, and if you're of the right frame of mind, it's hard not to nod your head. Nevertheless, despite his emancipation from the slow death of a married life, he still finds himself trapped - drawn to a particular woman like a moth to a flame, and everything, including his self-esteem, is out the door. Is it because, as he asserts, his own mortality is staring him in the face, or is it something more? In the end, no amount of possession would ever be enough, with age both granting him the wisdom to recognize his ideal and denying him the ability to have anything but a secret or openly absurd (in his mind, at least) relationship. Many good quotes here!

A Well Done Exploration on Life and Living, Death and Dying

The Dying Animal isn't really a novel as we have come to expect it, there is no plot to speak of, barely any dialog, and it's 156 pages. What it is is an exploration on the nature of life and death, it's about growing old in a country obsessed with the young. The narrator of this monologue is David Kepesh, a 70ish professor reflecting on an affair he had with one of his much younger students several years earlier. Something has happened, which we discover towards the end of the work, which has put him in a particularly pensive and reflective mood. He talks on about his affair and other events in his life. He's not a particularly likeable person, some would consider what he does despicable and sexist, yet what he has to say is compelling. I don't think I could have taken 500 pages of the Dying Animal, but 156 seems about right. What Kepesh has to say is thoughtful and thought-provoking, and the point of his monologue becomes clear as the work draws to a close. The Dying Animal clearly isn't for the faint of heart, the easily offended. If you can handle a thought-provoking exposition with apologies to no one, give this one a try.

Insight into the mind of a man

Roth, as usual, gets inside the mind of the lead character and describes his obsessive relationship with a woman from an brutally honest perspective. Only Roth can take this subject matter to the edge of sexual description without making it lewd. His appreciation of women is defined by this character. He also approaches the subject of mortality, not just his own, but that of others in the story. This is a short read with a long message. If you're familiar with Roth you will like it. If you're not a fan of his, read a sample first. There is a reason he won the Pulitzer Prize and this is one example.

This book is a fantastic short story of a raw and honest protagonist, allowing one to explore a world as seen through the eyes of man who never quite grasped his sexuality or sexually ties his worldview in all of his relationships. The prose is similar to Henry Miller so any budding author could find value in reading Mr. Roth's beautiful flow.

David Kepesh, the narrator of THE DYING ANIMAL, leaves his wife and young son for a life of "emancipated manhood." Then, for more than 30 years, Kepesh, a public intellectual, has complete freedom in his sex life, moving from woman to woman without commitment--albeit sometimes showing avuncular concern. Here's how alter-ego George O'Hearn and Kepesh advocate for this freedom.

George: "People think that in falling in love they make themselves whole? The Platonic union of souls? I think otherwise. I think you're whole before you begin. And love fractures you."

David: "He who forms a tie is lost. Attachment is my enemy."

In THE DYING ANIMAL, Roth explores what happens to Kepesh after he loses his detachment and, in an intensely physical but still distant fashion, becomes emotionally involved with a beautiful young woman. Eventually, he must choose between survival and detachment or the consequences of responsible love.

This is a fast-moving and fascinating novella.

Roth, distilled to his most powerful essence

Roth fans, students of serious literature, and those interested in a glimpse into the aging male psyche should truly enjoy this gem of a book. Roth proves his stature as one of America's greatest living writers by, in the mere span of roughly 150 large-type pages, offering insights into subjects such as man's intellectual nature versus man's sexual nature, Puritanism, academia and political correctness, the Sixties, marriage and family, mortality, and the randomness of fate. One could go on and on describing the many attributes of this book, but in the spirit of Roth's pithiness, I will just say: "read it!"

Roth is one of our greatest authors; his prose is not like any others in contemporary writings. His plots are so varied - I have read almost all his books and even if I am not in love with each plot, I must say they all surprise me. The main character is a mystery
in the beginning but by the middle, he is exposed and the beat goes on after that. The twists and turns kept me interested from the
beginning and I must say I did not want it to end. One has to be open to his sex scenes or they might be offended. I was not
offended as they fit nicely in the plot. I recommend this book as it is an excellent read.

This is only a note on how much I enjoyed it but not wanting to give away the plot, I must say the plot was filled with insight into one man, his family and his lovers lives. By attempting to avoid outing himself he shows the pain he instills on others and mostly himself.
