Very, Very Funny

Girlfriend 44 is a hilarious novel, a look into the mind of a 32 year old British male in search of the perfect woman. Most woman would call him a pig, but that's only because he's letting us in on his innermost thoughts. I guess he's an honest pig. Harry and his roommate, Gerrard, both have this ideal perfect woman in their mind. It sounds like they have dated nice, but not perfect women in the past, thus the relationships end. Then they meet Alice and she is perfect, gorgeous and for some reason, likes both of them. They battle it out for her attentions, and one of them eventually wins. As I said before, this book is very funny and will make you laugh out loud. My only complaint is that sometimes, Barrowcliffe goes off on these humorous tangents which sometimes detract from the narrative tension. You'll just be getting into a scene, and he'll start describing a pile of garbage, very funny, but not entirely necessary. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this very funny novel. Have fun.

Poorly printed/type set

I ordered this book but returned it without reading it due to poor print quality. As i've repeatedly found since moving to the US, the standard of book printing on amazon.com is often really inferior to the British versions of the same books available at amazon.co.uk. The type on this book was small and ran into the gutter in the book's spine. It was not set centrally on the page. It's a subtle thing, but I find it makes the book much less easy/enjoyable to read. I have now ordered the book from the amazon in the uk.

This seems to be a recurring problem with amazon USA books.

This book may contain more than you want to know about the workings of the male mind. "Girlfriend 44" is a laugh-out-lound/ groan-inside, novel about how men view women, dating, sex, themselves and each other. Prepare to be equally amused and HORRIFIED!

You will love it or hate it

I think this is a 'marmite' book, you are going to love or hate it and I loved it although I would say it's one for the guys not the girls as I would imagine some might find it chauvinistic and slightly offensive but I really enjoyed it because at the end of the day it is a fictional story with fictional characters and is there to entertain the reader and I have to say I found it entertaining.

Delicious, Amusing Read

I picked this book up while on vacation in Europe and might not have bought it had my husband not been simultaneously browsing through another copy and actually laughing aloud. After the first few pages, however, I was hooked, and laughed so hard over several passages that I nearly choked. I am a high school English teacher, choosy in my vacation material reading, and can only say I cannot remember a book I have enjoyed more. This is indeed "Bridget Jones" from a male perspective, but with a kind of Dickensian twist - Barrowcliff has a habit of digressing from his plot to make bitingly funny, satirical fun of the dating games inherent in the 30-something singles world. One cannot help but sympathize with the narrator, who is saved from utter villainy only by the clarity with which he views his own faults. The ending is surprisingly poignant and a very fine piece of work. For pure pleasure, absolutely excellent reading!

The male counterpart of Bridget Jones's Diary

I picked this one up at a convenience store in Scotland because it looked interesting. It kept me entertained during the trip back. Not as dry as most British Humor, but filled with amusing anecdotes and interesting comedy about being a bachelor with a strong sex drive. The plot surprises at times and is an adequate vehicle for the in-your-face humor. Don't expect a masterpiece of modern literature, but read it if you laugh at the articles in Maxim and FHM. This is a fun one, and reads quickly despite its heft.

I read infrequently and I'm easily bored, this book gripped me and despite a five month gap in the middle (don't ask) I couldn't put it down. Extremely funny with the kind of observations that make one wonder if this guy has actually been following you around......
