- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2011There has been a fashion to re-visit Churchill and dig into the darker parts of his nature - and miss the brillant doggedness which characterised this last Victorian.
Manchester takes a much more balanced approach and is without a doubt "a glass half full" optimist and is generous in his handling of Churchill as the man himself was in his own writings.
If you want to feel the life and times of a statesmand fighting against the recieved wisdom of his day to awaken his nation to the cataclysm before it then the is THE BOOK. This is a great biography of a great man - who had great flaws - but was a giant of our times and dragged Britian from the brink.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2014Quick delivery and forwarded to friend, who, like I was, is amazed at this historic figure who helped save
the Free World. He saw the dangers ahead so clearly when others wanted to deny the obvious. Thank our
lucky stars that he came along when he did. Brilliant.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2013Halfway through the first book: Manchester gives a fully rounded, fascinating portrait of Churchill the man (warts and all), and an in-depth view into his political life, in colorful, dramatic prose.
A legendary biography of the great man, and deservedly so.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2014William Manchester met Winston Churchill during a voyage on the Queen Mary in 1953. His masterpiece biography "The Last Lion, Winston Spencer Churchill" was sparked by his interest in the man from that single meeting. Manchester completed all the research for three volumes, but completed only the first two - this set - prior to his death (The third was finished by Paul Reid, whom Manchester hand-picked to write it.) This set covers the time from Churchill's birth to the start of World War II. It is an amazing, in-depth at the struggles and experiences that shaped Churchill into the leader we all recognize.
