From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Starting off 19 days after Unbreakable (Little, Brown, 2013) ended, Kennedy Waters's story continues as she deals with her mother's death and having unknowingly released the demon Andras from bondage. The teen is struggling with the aftereffects of her mistake and the fact that being Unmarked, her connection to the Legion (a group of teens whose charge is to protect the world from demon invasion) is increasingly tenuous. Separated from the Legion and forcibly placed at Winterhaven Academy by her aunt, Kennedy is helplessly aware of the havoc that the loose demon is causing. Unspeakable evil has been unleashed upon the world and young girls (who bare a remarkable resemblance to Kennedy) go missing daily without a trace. When Jared discovers the protagonist's whereabouts, he reunites her with the rest of the group. Kennedy's unmarked status makes it obvious that for mere survival, the missing fifth member of the Legion needs to be found as soon as possible. In their quest to find the mystery member, the teens soon discover just how deep Kennedy's past is entwined in the groups' existence. The story's twists and turns have riveting appeal and will keep readers engaged with a perfect balance of romance, fantasy, adventure, and intrigue. The narrative pace is fast and filled with suspenseful anticipation from the start. The Boston setting allows the author to interweave historic sites and events into the fantastical story line.—Sabrina Carnesi, Crittenden Middle School, Newport News, VA

When I read Unbreakable last year I instantly fell in love. This was the first thing I had ever read by Kami Garcia and I was not disappointed. The first book left me with some serious feels and I couldn’t wait for this sequel! Well, life got in the way I ended up waiting a rather long time for it actually. So one day last week I was cruising Audible.Com, trying to decide what to use my monthly credit on, and I found Unmarked. I love to read, but I can’t stress how exciting a good audiobook can be, and this one is amazing! The narrator does a great job keeping you focused and totally engulfed in the story, and the story itself is a perfect sequel.

If you can’t tell, I adore this series. In the second book of The Legion series we find out so much. It’s honestly heartbreaking because you just want to reach into the book and give Kennedy a hug. This poor child has already been through so much, and now it just gets worse. But that makes for a good story of course.

We get introduced to some new characters, who I think are rather exciting, including their new furry Doberman friend ‘Bear’. The thing I found the most interesting from the entire book was (now I’m so sorry for butchering the spelling here, but one of the drawbacks to an audiobook is you can’t see how the weird words/names are spelt) Gabriel’s weapon of choice: a whip made out of demon bones named Azazel. This thing was so cool, terrifying, but really really cool. And Kami does such a great job describing it that I can picture it so clearly in my mind. I hope one day these books are made into film, or tv, and I can see it come to life *added to my life wishlist*.

All in all this was a fantastic continuation to the already fantastic story that is The Legion Series. I can only give it a full five star rating because I loved it no less than that. Not as much romance-y bits as I would’ve liked, but there is good (spoilery) reason for that. So if you enjoyed Unbreakable and you’re kinda on the fence about picking up this sequel, I urge you too. And hey, grab the audiobook if you can, because I enjoyed it so much I plan on getting the first on audio to enjoy it again. Now we just wait for the next book…

Unmarked takes place several weeks after Unbreakable ends. Kennedy is now at a boarding school wallowing in self-pity. She blames herself for what happened in Unbreakable. She wants to hid away in guilt but the demon they let lose won’t let her. He is coming for her and so is the Legion. Jared busts her out of boarding school right as Kennedy receives a message from the demon. From there they discover a bunch of stuff about Kennedy’s family. Along with the original team Ellie, Kennedy’s bestie is added to the group.

Kennedy follows clues that lead her to her aunt- Faith. Her daddy’s sister, who is a member of the Legion. She explains to her how she has stayed alive, but them finding her means the demon can find her, too. Once Faith passes away, Kennedy should receive her mark even if Faith doesn’t want this life for her- she doesn’t it will take a wealth of knowledge and the Illuminati to find out why.

The Legion members end up being saved by the Illuminati, which is a little weird- since they are mortal enemies. It all gets explained. As well as her unmarked wrist- the explanation is a dozy though. Be prepared to yell at both of her parents.

The romance level in this one is burning! Kennedy and Jared are swoon-rific together. Jared oh Jared has really stepped up his game. Both in fighting demons and fighting for Kennedy. The battle is heavy and the team takes a hit. Will Kennedy and the Legion be able to recover?

Kennedy does a lot of personal growing in this tale. Which is nice, she is no longer one dimensional but is a lot more relatable. The secondary characters step up to bat more and I gotta say sometimes even steall the show. Not sure if that is a good think or a bad thing.

Overall, Unmarked an impressive second book of a trilogy. Main character gets more depth. Secondary characters grow- ends on another cliffhanger. When is the final book coming out?

Can I just say Oh My God!! Awesome freaking book! And damn if Kami didn't do it again and totally leave me hanging. Now I have to wait for the next book and she better be quick about it. Not gonna say too much more because I don't want to give any spoilers. Read this book. You will be on the edge of your seat, biting fingernails and heart racing up a storm. There was so much more back story in this one that answered questions from the first book. I was taken completely by surprise from certain revelations. So mad right now that I have to wait to see what happens next.

It was what could be expected from this type of novel. The writing is fabulous, though somewhat predictable. I loved the character of Kennedy's aunt. It was a fun read, but I can't believe I got caught in the trap-- the third book has no publication date in sight. That irritates me a little.
