Christopher Kimball, editor and founder of Cook's Illustrated magazine, grew up during the 1950s in rural Vermont, where he spent many summers working as a farmhand. His most cherished memories were of the yellow farmhouse, where an eclectic gathering of workers met at noon for hearty meals of roast, potatoes, boiled greens, baking-powder biscuits, molasses cookies, and perhaps a pie. Kimball's memories of this time make for a book that is as good to read as it is to cook from.

Kimball has painstakingly tried and tested hundreds of recipes for those childhood roasts, cookies, apple pies, and other nurturing farmhouse delights. In The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook, he reworks them for the modern kitchen (olive oil and hand mixers are allowed), while still capturing "the spirit of farmhouse cooking, using simple ingredients simply prepared."

Within each chapter, memories, recipes, and cooking techniques effortlessly roll into one another. In "The Dairy," we are whisked back to Kimball's 10th year, when he milked cows. Back then, "milk was stored in large cans set into a thick metal cooler filled with cold water." This description sets the perfect scene for milky recipes such as an American Baked Custard, several tapioca puddings, chocolate mousses, and cream pies. All adhere to the book's main premise: simple cooking with basic ingredients. Other chapters are solely devoted to meat, vegetables, baking, breakfast, cookies, fruit, and preserving, as well as a buying guide for purchasing the best cookware and kitchen tools. I bought my copy used so it came without it's pretty dust jacket. However that certainly didn't diminish what was inside the book! A lot of great information is written in here along with the recipes showing the origins of each recipe, giving you tips on how to properly cook the various ingredients, and to use things like a Dutch oven. I highly recommend this book.

I had been looking for this cookbook ever since I borrowed it from the library and had to return it. Later, I couldn't even find it there to borrow again! I love this book. If you are nostalgic, you'll enjoy all the stories about the community of people, holiday parades, pot lucks, farm life and priceless memories shared throughout the book, along with all the famous recipes of each person or event. It's a relaxing read, but you'll also learn a lot about basic "good cooking."

I enjoy this cookbook and trust the author without question. I know he has researched and determined the best of everything in the preparation of food. Wish I had it years ago when I had a family to cook for. I would definitely give it as a gift to young dedicated cooks.

Someone left some money to our local library to buy books in memory of my mother. The librarian bought "Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook" as one of her choices because my mom was such a good cook. I borrowed it to see what I thought of it and thought it was the neatest cookbook I'd seen in a long time. It is a "back to basics" cookbook with knowledge of everything a beginning cook would need to know to learn to cook, and what he/she would need to accomplish successful cooking. I am old enough so that I could probably have added some tips to the book, but I wanted to have it to share with our children and grandchildren. A great cookbook for anyone (and yes, I have referred to some of the recipes which I wanted because they weren't all fancy-smanchy). I'd highly recommend it.

Everything I have watched, listened to and read from Cook's Illustrated Editor Christopher Kimball has been excellent. The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook is no exception. The hot water cornbread recipe is my favorite. I have loaned this book out for that recipe, then ordered replacements for myself twice. Masterful cooks have been making dishes like hot water cornbread for generations. They pour boiling water into a portion of the recipe's cornmeal, whisk it into a pudding like mush- then build the batter up with ingredients until it's ready to pour into a heated cast iron pan. One out of fifty master it and get the ratios and techniques just right. Kimball gets their recipes, tests and refines them and then writes about the process of presenting the reader with the ideal recipe. He explains the how and why and the very chemistry of it. I highly recommend this book, and I believe you will enjoy it and learn a great deal from it as I have.

So happy with this cookbook. I adore Christopher Kimball's writing, and this lovely book is chock full of delightful stories at the beginning of each chapter, each one related to the yellow farmhouse in Christopher's community. Reminds me so much of my close knit childhood rural community in Indiana.
The recipes look yummy! Can't wait to try them. Highest recommendation to buy this book. Get the dust jacket if you can - much prettier than in the picture.
