Gloria Steinem's classic bestseller -- called "the ultimate self-help book" by the Los Angeles Times

For decades, Gloria Steinem has led a social revolution against injustice. In
Revolution from Within she sets out to restore the self-authority that such injustice has undermined -- in men as well as women, across boundaries of race, class, age, sexuality, and ability. Steinem uses stories from her own life and the lives of others to illustrate the many connections between the personal and the political, offering readers lessons on how to bring down all barriers to equality -- both external and internal. As she writes: "There is always one inner voice. Trust it."

"A fine triumph...Succeeds in holding the feminist course while expanding its horizons to include everyone." --
Time

"
Revolution from Within has a special sweetness -- that of triumph. Gloria Steinem dared to look behind the bravely smiling face she presented to the world for many years to encounter a not-so-bravely-smiling inner self. This meeting will strike sparks of recognition and encouragement." --Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple

I have not read the whole book yet but I already know from the 38th page that the book is going to be beneficial beyond words for me, with shining vital principles such as Stoics; where can you go wrong!. I first came across this book in a mental institution as I was diagnosed as a mentally disordered patient from having a strange paranormal experience for the first time. Physicians believed I experienced symptoms of phychosis. I was drawn to this book within the mental institution and found it to be a great book which enabled me to take a negative experience and transform it into a positive one. The book allowed me to to focus my mind on one thing "reading" and dispose of any worries I had with the environment I was in and I got out of the institution I was in sooner than expected without taking any medication which was initially prescribed by the physicians.

Ththankyou Gloria for sharing your valuable knowledge and allowing me to escape the negative experiences I created with my own mind as all i see now is happiness brought by through love! and thankyou too Amazon for delivering the book with haste and in perfect condition.

Can't wait to read the rest! :)

Thanks,

Matt

For the past four months I've been dealing with a lot of things that I never thought I'd have to deal with-the illness of a parent, the loss of job, the facing of a future that felt bleak and uncertain. More and more I felt lost and alone, even when I wasn't. Then I found this book. It has taken me weeks to read it, not because it's hard but because I have to take time away from it to think and...I don't want it to end. This book has changed the way I see myself and made me realize that besides the hard things I've been dealing with I've also been dealing with the reality of...what happens when you get what you always wanted and you realize that even it doesn't make you happy? We're taught that we go to school, graduate and go to college, meet a nice man and get married and have kids. But what happens when you've done all that and you're still missing something? For me, like countless other women I think, we feel like failures. It HAS to be us. We have everything and we're still too selfish to enjoy it. This book made me see that that is simply not true.
I have started the slow and painful process of going inward. One step and one day at a time. I was lucky, I wasn't abused as a child, but there are still pieces of the little girl I was that need to be loved and nurtured. I try and stop and think about her now, I try to see her beside be on this journey and I realize that in everything I do I owe her an answer. I owe her the best, I want the best for her, the same way I want it for my daughter.
We owe it to the little girls (and boys) we once were to love ourselves, and to get the most out of life, and that doesn't mean material possessions.
I don't mean to preach, I am just so happy and grateful that I read this book. My copy is now dog-eared, with highlighted sections and notes I've made myself. I plan on keeping this book out, so I can refer to it. Not just for what Steinem said but for what she made me realize and the notes I made for myself.
You owe it to yourself, the little girl you once were, and your daughter or the girls in your life to read this and share it.

This is an encyclopedia on self esteem. Steinem describes what it is. How people need it. And the systemic and familia and individual reasons for lacking enough as well as how to develop it. It's a very well researched book which stands up. The examples are clear and engaging. Read. Mark it up. Go back for what you need.

It's a resource book which is especially needed and useful to those of us living in the United States in 2018. Most of us need a more comprehensive and useful perspectives of ourselves and one another. A hierarchal, dualistic view damages people.

I am appreciating the perspective and stories shared in this book. I think this book was written before it's time. Gloria is an amazing, insightful person who definitely has had a purpose in this life. The depth of understanding portrayed in this book encourages me in who she is and where she is coming from. I remember hearing about her in her day, she was very much criticized. I am glad I took the time to read more about this woman and her life. She was cutting edge and a real voice in our world when we needed it.

I wish I had discovered this book sooner. It came as a revelation to me, because it deals with something that even high-achieving people, like Gloria Steinem, can neglect: Our self-esteem. Gloria Steinem had to overcome a lot of disadvantages in life, and she did so without bitterness and anger, and she remained positive. But she did have to make efforts to feel good about herself, and her ability to do that has made her one of the most positive feminists in public life. How we feel about ourself is a huge part of our lives, and it can affect our quality of life immeasurably. I read this book very slowly, a little at a time, because I didn't want to lose any of its hard-won wisdom. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel happier, and more in control of their lives. Because this book will give you a lot of the tools you need to improve your inner life, as well as your public life.

5.0 out of 5 stars an eye opener
Reviewed in France on September 24, 2018
Trying to understand why I had such a low self esteem, after yers and years of therapy, self help books, and the rest, I came across that book. Gloria Steinem brings all the pieces together, in such a deep and lucid way that I can only recommand it a 100% to anyone, men included, who is looking for the big picture. It shows for example how machism is linked to wild capitalism, and the damages it does deeply inside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melting down the glass ceiling for women - and men!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 18, 2017
This is an amazing book and is best absorbed slowly. More slowly than my usual two-three day reading of so many books. I have made 171 notes so far and am only halfway through Gloria Steinem's book. It's a must for anyone questioning why most women fail to get near the 'glass ceilings' of commerce, professional work and academic life. A fair few men will also find answers to questions they may not have yet been able to formulate. This is a desert island book, whichever way you look at it. It gives you a historical perspective as to how and why women have been sidelined, along with black women, black men, and anyone else who gets in the way of the archetypal White Christian Male ethos, which is often brutally limiting and personally limited. It could be a very diifferent world for us all if we were able to reach out from the narrow confines of the castrating - for both sexes - elements of our conditioning. Reading this book may help you to take the first steps forward. Consider, if you will, the idea that the value you place on yourself can free you from behaving like a malfunctioning robot everywhere in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars If everyone read this book, it really could start a positive revolution...
Reviewed in Australia on July 3, 2022
I first read Revolution from Within when it was published in 1992. I recently (2022) bought it again on kindle, and the recent reading has made me realise that this was the book that started me off on a road to self-discovery, awareness, growth, and healing. It's a lifelong process, but we have to start somewhere. Thirty years ago, this book woke me up with a start. Today, it's just as relevant, if not more so.

The book may be physically small, but it's filled with the tools for change – REAL change, because it's change that comes from within. It's about walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Read it, if you're ready. Heck, read it even if you're not ready. Awareness is the first step for real change, and, once the first step has been taken, we can't go back to the old way of living.

2.0 out of 5 stars Non soddisfatta
Reviewed in Italy on January 16, 2016
