During Christmas 1914, in a war already famous for its horror and brutality, enemy shook hands with enemy in No Man's Land, exchanged souvenirs, even played football. The truce between the trenches extended over at least two-thirds of the British line and there were similar cease-fires in the French and Belgian sectors. In some areas the peaceable mood lingered well into 1915. Originally published in 1984, this book is one of the finest accounts ever assembled on one of the most overlooked stories of World War I.

I loved this book. I'd viewed a "Cliffs Notes" video on the Truce and wanted to read about the sources of the info more in- depth, and this book does not disappoint. The detailed correspondence they've collected is thorough and impressive, both the first- hand accounts from participants who were still alive at the time, plus the letters and written reports from both Allied and Axis front lines. It is an imperfect book, as there are times when the authors get a little bogged down in some details, such as whether there were actual, formal football/ soccer games played, or simply informal "klck- abouts". The details in the book, in my view, more than make up for that shortcoming. Heartily recommended!

This is a wonderful story and a fascinating footnote in history, however, it could have easily and more appropriately been told in 100 pages or less. The length of the book (> 200 pages) diluted an otherwise interesting historical event that highlighted the goodness in humanity during a time of darkness and war.

Malcolm Brown and Shirley Seaton cover the events that led to, and followed from, the so-called "Christmas Truce" of 1914. In the early months of the great war, the trench lines had become, more or less, set and the enemy soldiers were close enough to speak to one another. The lengthy stalemate led to increased communication in some areas and, on Christmas Eve, to offers of a truce. In other words, "We won't shoot if you don't." Soon soliders from both sides were mingling, exchanging gifts, taking photos, and helping one another bury the dead. The authors let the soldiers speak for themselves as to what the Truce meant from a contemporary, emotional, and/or political standpoint and this objectivity gives the book added weight. An excellent reminder of the true humanity that is within us all, every one, and excellent Christmastime reading. Recommended.
