It's not about Dutch!

It seems that Edmund wanted to write his autobiography, but, not being an idiot, he knew that virtually no one would buy it, so he had the clever idea that he could take advantage of the fact that he and Dutch were, more or less, contemporaries and had some of the same stomping grounds when young. He sort of plastered some information about Reagan into his own life story and went with it. That allowed him to use a much more salable title. As a memoir this is a serious disappointment. Reagan comes across as a cardboard cutout figure whose actions and decisions were based more on an actor's instincts than on philosophical positions. It suits a certain progressive agenda to have Dutch portrayed thus, but it's historical value is minimal.

The only reason this even has two stars is that, for all his historiographic inadequacies, Morris is a dab hand at the keyboard.

Flawed but brilliant

The controversy concerning the insertion of fictional characters in Dutch is an interesting one and reminds me of a couple of quotes:
"LISTEN! HERE IS A STORY OF FACT AND FICTION, THE TWO ARE ALMOST ALIKE, YOU'LL NOT BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THEM.
LISTEN! TO THE RUMBLE OF THE GROUND AS IT SHAKES BENEATH YOU IN THE REMOTE DISTANCE.
LISTEN! TO ANOTHER TIME. YOU ARE LISTENING, PERHAPS, FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY ..."
and:
"Fact can never be written about it. The only fact there is, is the here and now. After that any attempt at capturing it becomes fiction."
Well, whatever. I feel that Edmund Morris made a mistake in introducing elements of fictional characters into Dutch simply because this aspect jars one into confusion at inopportune moments in the book. For me it marred the supposed reality of the biography. Authorial gymnastics is fine if it works, but here unfortunately it doesn't. A celestial type narrator would have made more sense.
Also, Morris uses the fictional device as a tool to make sarcastic digs at Reagan. For instance, Morris plays a much older self and introduces Gavin, his son, and uses him as a mouthpiece for heavier criticism or opinions.
The writing itself leans towards an English style rather than American, adopting an understated narrative with snide humour which the English are so keen on. Morris himself sounds like an Englishman on TV, but apparently has lived in the US since 1968, was born in Kenya, educated in Nairobi and South Africa, then worked for a number of years in London, or is this fiction?
I wouldn't call Dutch a nasty work out to insult Ronald Reagan, rather it is a complimentary one. In fact he comes out of it as quite a character having achieved much. After all it was Reagan's facade and human failings that actually gave back America its much needed self-esteem, as did Margaret Thatcher for Britain. No matter what one says about either of them now they at least managed that. And however Ronald Reagan conducted himself before and during his presidency this book makes it patently clear that his cardboard image was not the real Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan had a mastery about him and he had to work hard for it, for America ... and of course for himself.
Although the book is long, in my mind it's not long enough. There are several gaps in time, the Vietnam years and during the Carter era being examples. I wanted a blow by blow account of what Reagan was up to during these periods and what his thought were.
All right then, was the book enjoyable? Raaather, damn fine piece of work which helps the layman to understand the workings of Ronald Reagan better than any book I've read thus far, and this is my fourth.
So, on reflection Dutch by Edmund Morris might be flawed but nonetheless a brilliant book.

An excellent writer, with a unique and compelling literary device, looses the focus of his endeavor. Mr. Morris becomes obsessed with his make believe place in history and spins a useless tale of his fake heritage, youth, education and social status. As such the line between the real and the imagined become hopelessly confussed to the detriment of the subject. In addition Mr. Morris's inclination to jump in time permantely muddies the literary water of his work. That someone granted such a unique opportunity, with one of our great post war leaders, and squanders it on self absorbed indulgence is a true tradegy.

AWFUL biography

My wife and I both admired Ronald Reagan. Neither of us could even get through this terrible biography (which is very rare for either of us). The author does not seem to like or respect President Reagan. As my wife said to me, if you read this book you won't like Reagan any more. I would not have wanted Morris to be dishonest, but he repeatedly goes out of his way to be needlessly negative about Reagan. For example, he belittles Reagan's humble origins--shameful. The author is also patently self absorbed, writing vastly too much about himself (Ridiculous! Boring! No offense, Mr. Morris, but people don't buy a biography of Ronald Reagan because they want to read about you). Morris comes off as an arrogant, pretentious, intellectual snob who did not appreciate or respect Ronald Reagan and should never have agreed to write this pathetic biography. This book does a horrible disservice to the life and legacy of Ronald Reagan. I regret having wasted money on such garbage.

Good biography--Better story

Even with all of the publicity surrounding this book published before I began to read it, I still approached the book initially as a traditional biography. After the first 150-200 pages, including some confusion, I was able to settle in and enjoy what is a classic American story. After reading the book and listening to several Morris interviews it appears that the end product, a well written story, was the intended product.

Morris is a self absorbed cynic

Edmund Morris confuses cynicism with sophistication. He constantly offers the reader snide commentary on RR that has no value whatsoever beyond gossip.
The author is too self absorbed to be a biographer.
The margins of my copy of Dutch are full of notes I wrote expressing my frustration at this idiot of an author.
I will never read anything he has written again and I recommend to others that they save their time by doing the same.
