What I expected to read was a World War Two era historical fiction with some sixties era "where are they now?" I got that, certainly, and the words are expertly crafted, but I was also buffeted by heavy current events vibes. I'll be processing for weeks and asking myself what it means to pretend for so long and with so much energy, that the true self dies, because it's a relevant question for all, any era. This is a deep dive and an important read.

Initial Thoughts:

I read this book for my Literature and War class.

I've never read any of Kurt Vonnegut's other works but after this book I'm sure I will. After reading the description on the back, it was hard to imagine how an author could include humor in a situation where an American spy ends up in an Israeli prison, but Kurt Vonnegut had me laughing out loud. It was one of those laughs were you weren't sure if it was appropriate or politically correct, but it was so darn funny you just couldn't help it.

Spoilers!

Howard W. Campbell, our main character, was an American spy posing as a German Nazi. Throughout the book we get a lot of insight about what he did as a Nazi and why he was so effective. Howard really struggles with comprehending whether he was acting as an American or if he really had crossed the line into Nazi territory. This is where the `chilling shade of gray' phrase comes from.

Howard discusses his life before, during, and after the war up to the present time. The chapters weave together through the past and the present in such a fluid way, it was unlike anything I've ever read before. There are twists and turns I honestly did NOT see coming which kept the book exciting and turned it into a really fast read.

I may have a weird or awkward sense of humor because I found most of this book hilarious. I'm not sure if anyone would agree with me so I've been trying to justify why I found it so funny and my conclusion is this: the Nazi view is so unlike my own, and their ideals are so ridiculous, I just couldn't help but laugh.

Don't get the wrong idea though, this book did have its funny parts, but the war and the death is still a very present aspect. From Howard's point of view we see the deaths of Jews and Germans, something that to my knowledge hasn't been explored before in the same book. On one page you're learning about Howard's experience in a Jewish camp and in the next you're hearing about how a German he knew is killed. It was a wild experience to have these two events relayed so closely together and it puts this war into a new perspective.

Conclusion:

For whatever reason I loved this book. I was shocked by the ending, but I know I'll read it again. I'm definitely going to look into more of Vonnegut's work and I can't believe I haven't read more of him already!

I also wanted to mention that the drawings on the front and back cover were made by Kurt Vonnegut, which I think is super cool! I also really enjoyed the Introduction and the Editor's Note and the names of the chapters. I think I just really like Kurt Vonnegut.

Anyways, I'd recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in WWII, or an interest in spies. This book was a super fast read, I think it only took me five or so hours.

**WARNING SPOILERS / DETAILS**

"What froze me was the fact that I had absolutely no reason to move in any direction. What had made me move through so many dead and pointless years was curiosity.
Now even that had flickered out."

Vonnegut declares the moral of his story in the very first paragraph: we are what we pretend to be. Howard W. Campbell, Jr. then confesses his experience in this moral. A man stuck between two sides of the most famous hideous war mankind has ever created, being so lost in the curiosity and cruelty of war that he ends up with very little left of himself. He has no political message, he claims no country, he bleeds only with a lost desire of ‘his nation of two’ with his presumed dead wife Helga. This is his cost of pretending, a loss of identity, a numbness to the things that used to stir passion within him; writing he could never do again.

I really liked this book. Matter of fact, I think I could even say I loved it. Due to my recent enjoyment of both ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Band of Brothers’ miniseries, both set in WWII, I have reignited my curiosity and fascination with WWII. I think this definitely played a part in what I drew from the book. Vonnegut writes really well. I was surprised because I read God Bless You, Mr Rosewater, also by Vonnegut, and I felt nothing for it. This was so different though, written differently I feel.

Plenty of yellow highlights in my copy, I think I want to read it again to mull over some of the conversations had and the little subplots and curiosities they formed in my mind at the time. There is loads of ‘satire’ in this book apparently, a literary device that Vonnegut is famous for. What that means I don’t really know, but I guess it’s the way Vonnegut creates humour and provoking self-assessment from his shameless/shameful re-enactments of disaster and the conversations and interactions his characters have with love, loss, racism, war and simple plain evil.

I thought the story/plot was brilliant. I loved the interactions between Kraft and Campbell. I loved what Vonnegut did with Kraft and all that he represented. I loved the Resi/Helga twist and the Russian little sub plot at the end. I liked the tie-ins with real history, the conversation with Adolf Eichmann the obvious one.

To me, this is great literature. Smart clever writing, story and themes that question life and identity, dialogue that is witty and twisted, characters that you can see and touch and carry in your pocket. I could easily read this again, and probably will.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Click Wonder
Reviewed in Canada on April 20, 2020
I'm here to offer my opinion on a terrific book and a warning on the dangers of one-click Kindle. I first read this during my original Vonnegut binge, back in the 70's. It's one of my favorites, as much as some of his science fiction-y novels like Sirens of Titan, Cat's Cradle or Slaughterhouse 5.

The plot revolves around Howard W. Campbell jr., self-accused war criminal, artist and US double agent. The book is about some of Vonnegut's best themes; loyalty to oneself and others, doing evil in the supposed service of good, the bankruptcy of ideologies and his loudly proclaimed moral that 'We are what we pretend to be, so be careful what you pretend to be.'

I paused over this title in the middle of my orgy of adding books to my Goodreads list. I clicked on the Amazon button (so easy to do) and then clicked on what I was sure was the "sample" button, and reacquainted myself with Mother Night. 15 chapters later I'm thinking this is an awfully long sample and sure enough I'd bought the book. I recently bought and read my first ever romance novel this same way. I suppose I could have returned 'Mother Night' but by that time I just wanted to finish it. I don't begrudge Vonnegut's estate the few pennies they'll get from my fumble fingered purchase.
He earned them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Story about identity, splashed with classic Vonnegut humour
Reviewed in India on March 5, 2017
I guess I'll have to say it, this has been one of the best books I've ever read. It has the signature Kurt Vonnegut humour, with an astoundingly moving story. Slaughterhouse-five might be his most famous work, but as Kurt himself believed, this is amongst his best 3 (others being Slaughterhouse-five and Cat's Cradle).

The story is about the life of Howard W Campbell, Jr, a Nazi propagandist, and an American double agent. The duties he has to fulfill during the war could be labeled crime against humanity on their own ground, but he only did it to fulfill his other duty of working for the Americans. As Vonnegut said once in an interview "We are what we pretend to be, and must be careful of what we pretend to be".

It started as a good book, and as the pages went by it transformed itself into a hard hitting story. All of this wrapped up in signature Vonnegut writing. The anti war stance is a common theme like in most other Vonnegut's works, and this book is no exception. Identity search is also a major plotline here. It moved me so much, I almost choked on the last page.

This was on my to-read list for a long time. Lo and behold, one of the most thoroughly moving books of all. Definite recommend to everyone interested in WW2 (or any war for that matter) and spy stories.
