In his classic book, T.E. Lawrence—forever known as Lawrence of Arabia—recounts his role in the origin of the modern Arab world. At first a shy Oxford scholar and archaeologist with a facility for languages, he joined and went on to lead the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks while the rest of the world was enmeshed in World War I. With its richly detailed evocation of the land and the people Lawrence passionately believed in, its incisive portraits of key players, from Faisal ibn Hussein, the future Hashemite king of Syria and Iraq, to General Sir Edmund Allenby and other members of the British imperial forces, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom is an indispensible primary historical source. It helps us to understand today’s Middle East, while giving us thrilling accounts of military exploits (including the  liberation of Aqaba and Damascus), clandestine activities, and human foibles.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This is the exciting and highly literate story of the real Lawrence of Arabia, as written by Lawrence himself, who helped unify Arab factions against the occupying Turkish army, circa World War I. Lawrence has a novelist's eye for detail, a poet's command of the language, an adventurer's heart, a soldier's great story, and his memory and intellect are at least as good as all those. Lawrence describes the famous guerrilla raids, and train bombings you know from the movie, but also tells of the Arab people and politics with great penetration. Moreover, he is witty, always aware of the ethical tightrope that the English walked in the Middle East and always willing to include himself in his own withering insight.

From the Publisher

The monumental work that assured T.E. Lawrence's place in history as "Lawrence of Arabia." Not only a consummate military history, but also a colorful epic and a lyrical exploration of the mind of a great man who helped shape the Middle East as it exists today.

A true story that is stranger than fiction

A true story that is stranger than fiction
This is a very entertaining and informative book about the Arabian fight for independence which was a back water event in World War I. Lawrence is a gifted writer who tells a gripping reality based yarn. He is particularly effective in describing the milieu in the which events unfolded. He convinced me more fully than ever before that I would not like to live in that region. Neither the book nor the movie explained why Lawrence took up the cause of the Arabians as he did; but since the story was based on historical fact, there is little doubt that he did commit himself to their efforts to free themselves from the Ottoman Empire - even though he knew that in the end the Europeans would take over. His title is a bit of a mystery as it has no clear connection to the narrative. Perhaps he liked the phrase and pinned it on an available donkey.

Please note, the 5 stars are for Lawrence's book, not the publisher, which I will get to in a second.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a challenging read, but like so many challenges, the reward is made greater through the difficulty of the test. Lawrence's language and syntax are unfamiliar to the modern reader, but it is beautiful in its descriptions of the desert and Lawrence's life in the Arab Revolt in WWI. The book was written from memory after his previous version, written from his war journal, was lost on a train journey. He had destroyed the journal after completion of his first version, so the fact that all of this was done by sheer recollection is amazing. The amount of detail is more than most readers will need, and that is one of the great challenges of the book, along with the sometimes confusing word choice and sentence structures. But, many of the passages that recall his experiences of desert life among the Arabs are as well written as anything in the English language. Seven Pillars also gives some insight into the complex mind of Lawrence: his self loathing, insecurities, sexual oddities, hatred of his physical body, and simultaneous love and disgust with the Arab people. It is a fascinating glimpse into a mind that was struggling to understand itself and its place in the world. For those who complete the journey with Lawrence, the reward will be much more than a deeper understanding of WWI military history.

If Lawrence's writing was not challenging enough, the typographical errors in the edition I read make some passages incomprehensible. BN Publishing should be ashamed to put their name on a book that has so many errors in it. From what I gather, this is an optical scan of another text, done by a computer, and published under the BN name. However, the scan was obviously not edited by a human afterwards. A common mistake by the computer optics is to read the letters "rn" in a word as "m". Instead of a scout returning to camp to "warn" the others, he comes back to "wam". You can imagine the hilarity that ensues as you attempt to read a passage several times, believing that Lawrence's vast vocabulary has gotten the better of you once again, only to finally pick out where the software made a mistake. Just this morning, I was rereading a passage from Book X that I was never able to discern. It reads "Our mobile column of airplanes, armored cars, Arab Regulars and Bedouin collected at Azrak. We determined to rot all through railways leading out of Deraa. The southern line we rot near Mafrak..." For the life of me, I don't know what "rot" means in these sentences. Unfortunately, those types of errors are common throughout the 400,000 word text. For this reason, I cannot recommend the BN Publishing version of this book. If there was a hardcover, human-edited, unabridged text I would pay a pretty penny for it, but this seems to be the only one on the market. Stear clear of the BN Publishing edition at all costs! I hope you can find a great version of this wonderful book and will treasure it as much as I do.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a war history, but it reads like a novel. I imagine most people read it for the military aspect, but the book is also rich in psychology and observation. The author slyly includes references to classic quest and adventure stories, and at least one instance of parody. There are sad parts, funny parts, and plenty of irony.

Lawrence turns out to be a military genius, but he is modest about his abilities as a soldier. He admits, for instance, to shooting his own camel during a charge. This is his charm as a narrator. Like Jack Ryan in the Tom Clancy novels, Lawrence is not a fighter but an analyst. He requests a military advisor, and the army sends him instead.

One thing that struck me about Lawrence was his abiding sensitivity and compassion. He is sympathetic to the two outcast boys he takes on as servants, and his figure for “acceptable casualties” is zero. He also has an amazing stock of learning to draw upon. It’s hard to believe that one man can know so much, accomplish so much, and also be a good writer.

Lawrence exhaustively describes Arabian culture, history, and geography. He spends pages describing the rocks and sand in each part of the desert. A good editor might have cut all this, but I didn’t mind. It develops the character of Lawrence as a compulsive thinker.

Left to plan the campaign on his own, he complains that he knows “nothing” about strategy, except what he has read of Hannibal, Belisarius, Napoleon, Mahan, Foch, Saxe, and Clausewitz. The book is filled with gems like, “the enemy can have the railroad, as long as we control the desert.” Lawrence also discusses his political challenges with the tribes and the towns, and the Allied high command.

If you are planning an insurgency, you definitely want to read this book. I also recommend it to those who like adventure stories. If you read Tom Clancy, for instance, or Patrick O’Brien, you are sure to enjoy Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

One note on the Bybliotech Discovery version. It seems to be one of those optical reader texts, where the letters are sometimes messed up. It’s better than most, though. I also have it in hardcover, and I did most of the reading on my Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edition Kindle austère et presque donnée
Reviewed in France on March 5, 2018
