Purchase options and add-ons
The Daemon is in absolute control, using an expanded network of shadowy operatives to tear apart civilization and build it anew. Even as civil war breaks out in the American Midwest in a wave of nightmarish violence, former detective Pete Sebeck—the Daemon's most powerful, though reluctant, operative—must lead a small band of enlightened humans in a movement designed to protect the new world order.
But the private armies of global business are preparing to crush the Daemon once and for all. In a world of shattered loyalties, collapsing societies, and seemingly endless betrayal, the only thing worth fighting for may be nothing less than the freedom of all humankind.

Highly entertaining and thoughtful, you could easily be looking at the current/near future. This book is very worth the time.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2014** This is a sequel to "Daemon" **
It's a pretty good, very imaginative vision of a near-future world where people begin rising up bit by bit against the old regime of corporate domination. The central premise of this book is rather heavy on the "conspiracy theory" mind-set, the almost cliche idea now that major multi-national corporations are actually the puppet masters of everything, even large aspects of the government, and that, if threatened, they would do anything to retain that power. Note that if you've read Suarez's first book, this is a significant departure in theme ... in fact, other than a carry-over of characters, places, and ideas, "Freedom" is nothing like the initial premise of "Daemon". This is not necessarily a bad thing; where "Daemon" made the deceased Sobol and his pet computer project out as the ultimate protagonists, "Freedom" does something of a 180 flip and now portrays the Daemon as a sort of protector of the people and a game changer.
I can't say much more about the plot without ruining it, but suffice to say, one needs to read both "Daemon" and "Freedom" to get the full nature of the tale that Suarez is spinning. Ignoring the nearly paranoid conspiracy aspect of "Freedom", and willfully suspending some sense of disbelief resulting from this, Saurez spins a masterful tale of suspense overlaid on a message about modern economics, society's detachment from the political process, and the real sense of helplessness when it comes to controlling your personal data and what companies know about you. The story is a masterful combination of quick-paced action and intelligence, the likes of which any Michael Crichton or Marcus Sakey fan will appreciate.
As with the first book, the reason I can't QUITE bring myself to rate this 5 stars is that the author goes beyond near-future sci-fi a little too much and into the raised-eybrow territory of educated supposition and wild extrapolation. Between the heavy "corporations control everything" aspect, the use of technology that is either bleeding edge prototype (or drawing board stage) in large quantities, and the unexplainable way that much of what happens regarding Darknet operatives is even possible is a bit hard to swallow. Further, towards the end of the novel, society has gotten to the point where fuel is said to be $18 a gallon ... EIGHTEEN DOLLARS A GALLON ... and yet the government has apparently done little about it, entire cities are becoming slums, there's only a 33% unemployment rate, and someone there's still a functioning economy ... that was a bit much for me to accept, given how heavily the government subsidizes alternative energy technology every time fuel prices go up.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025The story is about multinational corporations taking over the world, while mostly everybody is but a powerless slave. Luckily, there's a quasi AI trying to prevent this.
Very well written, lots of action.
And it makes you think; I look around and I see just what this book is describing, except there's no AI.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2010In "Freedom", Suarez brings the impact the Daemon has had on the world, and the underworld of corrupt governments and businesses, to a boiling point in a successful denouement to the brilliant setting created by the end of the first novel. The action is intense and realistic, and the manner in which the world and goverments react to the Daemon's control is extremely well considered, which has a chilling effect on the reader. Key characters are followed as their journeys come to a satisfying close, while new characters bring a fresh perspective on whether or not what Sobol is trying to accomplish is actually evil, or merely revolutionary.
If you enjoyed Daemon, you will equally enjoy Freedom. I was very satisfied with the conclusion to the story. Excellent read...and extremely appropriate in a world where cyber security is not yet a forefront of concern. I truly felt the manner in which the uber-rich and elite behaved in the situation/environment presented in this book was as accurate as I would expect in the "real world".
If you haven't read Daemon...you should!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2019The story of “Daemon” and “Freedom” portray an incredibly realistic account of how technology can be used to initiate a global revolution towards a more thriving, just and sustainable world. This story is relentless in how it comments on the “powers that be,” showing how pathological the worldview is of those in the “ruling elite” classes and how even in the midst of global transformation all they think about is greed. If one was “asleep” to the many truths coming out in our world right now then this book would be a fun wake up call bc it addresses, in this sci fi book, many real world problems we currently face from Monsanto’s GMO patents to Corporatocracy to the unsustainability of capitalism to how mainstream media could be and/or is already being used to sow confusion in the public (even shows the media being used to create a global false flag attack). So IMHO this book is a damn good read and anyone would benefit from it.

くまちょっぷReviewed in Japan on December 30, 20195.0 out of 5 stars

As good as Daemon, even spectacular at times. I felt like watching a movie every time someone fight took place.
J JohnstonReviewed in Canada on September 13, 20145.0 out of 5 stars A Sequel as Great as the First Book
The sequel to Daemon, which isn't made clear pretty much anywhere on Amazon, this book is about the growth of the real-life civilization created by an online game, and the forces that must destroy it at all costs to ensure their own survival.
Daniel Suarez is an excellent writer and an even better story-teller. If you like techno-thrillers at all, you have to read this book!
My only complaint is that there isn't a third in the series.

Amazon CustomerReviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 20125.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi for technical people
I've heard some people say that Daemon and Freedom are full of errors typical of a novice author, which may well be, but takes nothing away from my enjoyment if so.
I appreciate the way the book takes no time to explain to me what DNS is, or what online gaming is. I am expected to understand basic computing and networking. This means the story feels written for an audience who understand the concepts of the book and how realistic they could be.
The story is bloody and violent, technical and detailed, interesting and thought provoking about the potential future we are heading towards with such a focus on technology and capitalism driving us.
I'm often not able to get into these books, but this author had hooked me from chapter 2 of Daemon. What he described as 40,000 dollar HUD glasses in 2006 are the Google Glass of next year. Most topics in the book appear to have been researched, based on real world developing technologies and then extrapolated to their logical end. And frequently the predictions in the book are modern day consumer products at this point.
If Kill Decision is anything as accurate as these books have been, we are facing trouble. But I love that thought.
