Mobilizing Generation 2.0

Mobilizing Generation 2.0 is a practical and immediately useful guide for nonprofits, political campaigns, organizers, and individuals who want to better understand how to use Web 2.0 technologies. This is a must read for people new to Web 2.0 tools who are thinking of using social media and its a good read for those, such as consultants, who want to effectively communicate the value of these tools to their clients.

What I particularly liked about the book was the 'How to get started', 'Strategic considerations' and 'Challenges and Opportunities' sections behind each web 2.0 tool (Blogs, Social networks, Video and photo sharing, Mobile phones, Wikis, Maps and Virtual worlds) that help you implement and anticipate the problems you may face putting this exciting toolbox into place in a non-profit context.

I was a little disappointed in this book. It is great for people who are not already familiar with wikis, blogs, social networking, etc. However, it is of little use for those who are already familiar with these. I was hoping for something new on how to get college students involved, but I did not find anything substantial that I haven't read somewhere else.

For an ignoramus about blogging, social networks, etc. I find Rigby's book to be clear and informative. The case studies are extremely useful. He takes a balanced view of what can accomplished via the Internet and other modern electronic marvels.

As a nonprofit tech professional looking to explore mobile campaigns, I found the chapter on mobile tech really clarified this burgeoning field. I was so thankful, in particular, for the "How to Get Started" section. It explained so well how to actually make it happen. By the time I was done, I had a good sense of the landscape and was able to move ahead in my nonprofit's plans for a mobile giving campaign. Couldn't ask for more!

Ben Rigby's Practical Guide to Web 2.0 provides essential advice for anyone who is serious about reaching a young and tech-immersed audience. For those with online cold feet: open up this smart and accessible book. Rigby makes a great case for diving in-- and then provides the lessons that will get you where you want to go. I picked up this book when we were getting ready to build a new media site. It was like finding a treasure map.

My copy of Mobilizing Generation 2.0 is dog-eared. I think. I'm not exactly sure what it looks like, anymore -- I keep lending it out. I do know it's easy to read, inspiring, useful.
