It's a small book but it covers a wide range of the sources where runic artifacts were found, how the runes were used, and a variety of styles on the runic scripts. The meanings of the runes are described and how these were inferred from rune poems. So it's interesting to think about the connection between these poems and the runic meanings. Even in today's world of having information available online, this book still greatly beats out most websites on the subject with its thorough explanations about Old Norse and with its images from artifacts and historic written sources. I don't know if I would call the book an introduction or an overview but it's very good. There is a lot of information packed into this thin book, especially with the small font size of the words. I would personally consider this book a must-buy on the subject for anyone building up their Norse library or wanting information that is difficult to find online. I've had an interest in runes for so many years now but I'm not a university student majoring in history, so I learned many new things by reading this book.
This book's physicality is well printed with crisp font and clean images, with good contrast, on smooth paper. The book is unfortunately turning yellow but it looks great for being older than I am. It could be younger though since I don't know the exact date it was printed, just the copyright. I bought this used. I'm sure the few new copies aren't really that new. The book is thin in dimension. The wide margins are great to have. I would suggest anyone that's very much into this subject to buy this book while the price is low, before the supply runs low and shoots the price way high as this book is out of print.
