A pioneering psychologist reveals how three emotions can provide the surest, quickest route to success in any realm.

A string of bestsellers have alerted us to the importance of grit – an ability to persevere and control one’s impulses that is so closely associated with greatness. But no book yet has charted the most accessible and powerful path to grit: our prosocial emotions. These feelings – gratitude, compassion and pride – are easier to generate than the willpower and self-denial that underpin traditional approaches to grit. And, while willpower is quickly depleted, prosocial emotions actually become stronger the more we use them. These emotions have another crucial advantage: they’re contagious. Those around us become more likely to apply them when we do.

As this myth-shattering book explains, prosocial emotions evolved specifically to help us resist immediate temptations in favor of long-term gains. Originally, they enabled us to build lasting relationships with other people, and they still do that brilliantly. But they can also be adapted to strengthen our bonds with our own future selves – who will benefit most from the grit we need to succeed in life. No matter what our goals are, EMOTIONAL SUCCESS can help us achieve them with greater ease and deeper satisfaction than we would have thought possible.

Review

Emotional Success is as inspiring as it is practical. DeSteno shows us how to use our feelings of gratitude, compassion, and authentic pride to improve our lives—and the world.”—Arianna Huffington, author of Thrive and The Sleep Revolution.   "Are high achievers simply blessed with more willpower than the rest of us? DeSteno's provocative argument is that the science of success is, in fact, very much the science of social emotions like gratitude and compassion. I, for one, am convinced!"—Angela Duckworth, author of Grit.   “One of the leading psychologists of our time has discovered the keys to success: our emotions. They give us strength, they help us stick to our goals, they make us better friends and better people. DeSteno shows how gratitude, compassion, and—surprisingly—pride are essential to the good life. Emotional Success is a beautifully written and very important book.”—Paul Bloom, professor of Psychology at Yale University and author of Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion “If you think the key to self-control is overriding your emotions, think again. Moral emotions can strengthen your willpower—and this fascinating book uses the latest social science to explain how.”—Adam Grant, author of Give and Take, Originals, and Option B with Sheryl Sandberg   "A revolutionary way to achieve our goals that promises to make us happier, healthier, and more resilient along the way. Using persuasive prose and cutting-edge science, DeSteno shows how we can attain grit and grace—the perseverance to succeed combined with the qualities that inspire others as well."—Chade-Meng Tan, author of Joy on Demand and Search Inside Yourself   “Anyone who hopes to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life should read this book. DeSteno reveals the hidden power of “prosocial emotions,” feelings like pride (but without hubris), gratitude, and compassion. He relies on research rather than anecdote to convince us that these emotions underlie grit and emotional intelligence.”—Peter Salovey, Professor of Psychology and President, Yale University, and discoverer of emotional intelligence     —

This book hits the sweet spot and I couldn't put it down once it was delivered yesterday It offers both insights and advice on a topic that is always of interest to me, namely how to be successful. But the advice here is unique and flies in the face of conventional wisdom. It shows us how to use the power of emotions to build perseverance to pursue our future goals. I think the author does a great job of making his case for why social emotions like gratitude and compassion can build grit, but the most important part may be how he also shows the ways that these emotions build social connections along they way, which are in themselves crucial for success and wellbeing. It's a science-based book, as opposed to one that relies on anecdotes and stories. In this case, that's a plus since the author doesn't get bogged down in the science, but explains it in a very interesting and understandable way. It's an enjoyable and worthwhile read, and one that has made me consider how I approach my career and personal goals.

An excellent summation of oft overlooked techniques for "making your way in the world." In the current environment of politics, business and social media, it seems many people feel the need to launch scathing critiques of almost everything regardless of the merits or the underlying characteristics of the subject. Such an approach rarely achieves anything useful and virtually guarantees a sharp response that often escalates. DeSteno reminds us that a more effective approach is to express gratitude and display compassion while taking pride in doing your best and being less judgmental. Withholding critical judgments and offering praise where due is a far more effective method of obtaining objective discussion and perhaps consensus. To the recipient of praise, and in the absence of hurtful criticism, it is almost like a narcotic that will transform the nature of the interaction into a positive exchange rather than the defensive polarizing screaming matches displayed today. Anyone interested in more positive exchanges in their life would do well to read this book and heed the sage advice and insights therein.

I have a science and Engineering background, so I love all of the evidence provided via studies conducted. Really intriguing concepts. Potentially very helpfull.

Why only 4 stars? Studies are extremely difficult to draw definite conclusions from. Results are wide open to interpretation and usually lead to drawing conclusions from insufficient facts. The author mentions this in a few instances, but often doesn't give enough experimental information (number of participants, demographics - many studies seem likely to be 100% college students which heavily skews any assessment of cognitive resource limitations.)

The above not withstanding, it is very thought provoking and worth a read. Well written, clear, and succinct.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Emotional Success: The Power of Gratitude, Compassion, and Pride. I was inspired to buy the book after hearing the author speak about it in a national radio interview. Personally, I was always a believer in willpower – and believed that successes were due to applying willpower and grit, and failures were due to weakening willpower, or a loosening of “grit.” I never really considered the importance of positive emotions and how crucial they are in achieving success. Ultimately, if we channel our prosocial emotions correctly, success becomes that much easier to attain.

Overall, David DeSteno’s book is an entertaining and fast read. He illustrates his points with great examples, both historical and from his own research. The writing is crisp. I learned much that I will take with me throughout my life.

The title is accurate. And, if you are the type to trust an author, it really tells you everything you will learn in the book.
That is to say that the author does a good job of providing evidence that these three emotions are powerful in shaping our actions. They are significantly more powerful than mental will alone, it would seem, and chapter after chapter and, study after study confirms it to be true. It is unfortunate however that so much effort went into detailing and explaining the research that proves this point only to leave it there. The book shares zero practical advice, or even personal opinion, on how to execute it.

The table is set, readers can see that will-power is not the best way to achieve reliable self-control, but that is where it ends; with no practical or proven plan for developing them. Anything would help. Even his personal anecdotes would be of some value moving forward. Sadly, you will have to do your own experiments to figure out how to build gratitude and pride on your own; assuming that you have the will-power to stick to it until the emotions can be developed that is.

I've struggled, and suffered, under the tutelage of "conventional wisdom" advice for success for way too long. Conventional wisdom is just sh%t that sounds good, is easy enough to grasp so that idiots can repeat it and almost always is entirely wrong. The author explains how a healthy mindset is more important than just determination and grit. Determination and grit are important but they belong in the context of a healthy mindset and this book explains exactly what that is and opens the door to attaining it. He doesn't give out "The Seven Steps to Success" formulaic thingy, he gives you what you need to know to have a healthy mindset and he is very, very qualified to do so: check out his qualifications, then throw away all that conventional non-wisdom.

This book has the authority of having been written by a major scholar in his field, yet is thoroughly comprehensible to a layperson. I think this is a very welcome and needed counterpoint to the many books that promote ways of using willpower and the executive voice to overcome undesirable behaviors - methods that not only fall short as aids in achieving goals, but also produce counterproductive and harmful results.
