Fun, easy, and so cool!!

I got this for my 6 year old twin daughters, and they LOVE it! I think the age range is really 6 and up, though I've seen 8 and up. It isn't hard at all for my 6 year olds, though. They can do the black outline, but I usually do that part for them because I'm faster and have a steady hand. If you let the outline dry for a couple hours, then the inside is so easy to fill in with the colored paint. I will usually do the outline while they are at school, then they finish it when they get home. The finished product is so cool! It looks like real stained glass! You peel it off the plastic sheet you created it on, then you can stick it to any glass surface (windows, mirrors, glasses, vases, bathroom tiles, shower door, etc...) The book has 100 designs, but you can use any design you want. My girls wanted to do this everyday after school for weeks. We eventually had to order the refill paint pack (which has lots more colors). I even have had fun doing this myself. Mixing colors and making new effects is really fun.

The hardest thing is peeling off designs that have lots of thin edges and details (especially big ones) because the art will stick to itself, and it doesn't come undone. If you put it in the freezer, you can usually get it unstuck, though.

We have thought of so many things we can do with this. We decorated our back door with flowers for spring, and we'll put up fall leaves for fall.

This is a great, easy craft project that has a really neat end product.

Great for older kids too!

I bought this for my 15 yr old daughter because she loves to draw and she also has a not-so-appropriate tendency to sprinkle her things with graffiti. I thought this kit might give her an acceptable way to "draw" on her things. She definitely took to the idea, creating decorative frills for her bedroom windows and mirrors. She also got creative and made personalized clings for all of our water bottles so we could tell them apart. Within a month she had used up all of the inks and was asking for more. If you have a child or teen who enjoys drawing and likes to decorate their stuff, this is a great gift idea.

So much fun!

Got this for my niece a few years ago, and her mom commented on how she locked herself in her room all weekend and was consumed with creating these window stickers. Based on her comments, I bought if for my daughter as a birthday gift, and it was such a hit that she would not stop either. OK, I need to admit that I couldn't help trying my hand at it myself, and boy, oh boy, it sure is addicting!

The book contains many window art templates, colored ink stuff (see pic0, and tear-out plastic sheets. The idea is to cover the templates included in the book with the plastic sheet, then start tracing the outlines with the stuff from the black ink bottle. Then comes the first of two difficult steps in the process - waiting several hours for the black outline to dry! After it is dried, you can fill in the rest of the picture with the colored inky stuff from the other bottles - then wait again for it to dry.

Here are some tips we found online and through experimentation:
- Put the plastic sheet with the completed window art in the freezer for a few seconds before removing the art from the sheet. The cold temp will make the artwork harden, and this will allow an easier release from the plastic.
- After placing the art on a window, you can remove the artwork from the glass to reposition it, but repeatedly doing so will create gaps and holes. Hold an ice pack on the design for a few seconds to harden it slightly for easier removal.
- Be generous with the filler inky stuff because when it dries, there will be some shrinkage and too little of the filler will create holes.
- You can use all sorts of designs as templates including coloring book pages and clip art. We made several Hello Kitty window art by using a Sanrio coloring book as a template. Cool!
- The extra inky stuff (available as extra supplies) are a bit pricey. We tried several alternatives. First, we tried school glue with food coloring. It worked ok, but left a cloudy residue which gave it a slightly opaque finish. It would work well in some designs, but not all. Next, we tried using Ailene's tacky gel glue with food coloring. That worked better than the school glue, but there were many air bubbles and there seemed to be a lot more shrinkage. The finish was clear and gave the illusion of clear hard candy. We also tried adding glitter to the Ailene's glue, and but this did not work too well. The glitter settled at the bottom of the bottle and was very time consuming to redistribute. It is best to add glitter directly to the art while still wet, as opposed to adding it to the bottle. Finally, we tried puffy paint and other art paints. The finish resulted in an opaque finish. Our conclusion? The inky stuff from klutz works best, but a good alternative is the Ailene's glue with food coloring. Oh, BTW, the food coloring takes a while to incorporate into the glue. Also, the black outliner cannot be substituted with school glue or Ailene's glue. For that, we used liquid lead, which you can get from any art or craft store. Also, an added bonus is liquid lead comes in gold and silver too!. It comes out much thicker than the stuff from Klutz, but it will work, and you can get a big bottle of the stuff for less than the cost of a smaller bottle from Klutz.
- It will stick to any glass surface. My daughter put some fish she made on the shower door, and her younger sister repositions them every week so that different fish have a chance to swim in different places.

I have since purchased several more of these books for gifts, and each person we gave it to has enjoyed it immensely. I would highly recommend it.

Great fun, fantastic results . . . but the paint runs out so quickly

My 8-yr-old daughter loves this book and I enjoy it along with her. It's quick, it's easy, it's fun--and the resulting window clings are quite beautiful. My daughter quickly got the hang of marbleizing the colors and blending colors with a toothpick and has enjoyed experimenting with different techniques.

My only quibble is that this activity really eats up the paint since essentially you build a wall with black outlining paint then fill it in with the colored paint. Expecting to run through paint quickly from reading other reviews, I bought a refill set along with the book at the onset. Still, we used up all our black outlining paint (and much of the rest of the paint as well) in an afternoon, making maybe a dozen clings.

Turns out that we so like making window art and so enjoy the results that I'm regularly buying more paint. In fact, right now we're waiting for the fanatic pack to arrive along with a spare extra large bottle of the black outlining paint. (And I already wish I'd ordered more black than that!)

So, I'd highly recommend this product, but warn that you'll be buying lots and lots of extra paint, so you should probably order a refill or two while you're ordering the book. It's worth it, though, and I can't imagine anybody who wouldn't enjoy making window art so much that they wouldn't want more paint.
