Genealogists can trace your family and discover many things you might not wish to know. Nick Herald is good at doing exactly that for a lot of people in this book and manages to stay alive. Mr. Fox has invisioned an interesting plot and perhaps one not entirely fantastic. Is there any field of endeavor completely free of those who would fleece the gullible - I think not. Fleecing by a genealogy organization makes for a good story and Mr. Fox's loveable and not so loveable characters enhance the tale. This is a very entertaining read!

The 2nd in the series of Nick Herald genealogical mysteries. It's a page turner that will keep you interested. The articulate Jimmy Fox knows his stuff and his obvious love of the Big Easy captivates. Rich in history and well crafted Fox writes for the intelligent and educated reader. Generously spattered with intellectual snobbery coupled with a tongue in cheek disdain for the pretentious rich, Fox keeps it real and does not fail to provide satisfaction. Immediately downloaded the 3rd in the series.
On a personal level, if I have a criticism I get a little frustrated with the hero Nick Herald - I get annoyed with people who don't learn their lessons and get opportunities but never get ahead. I would like to see the lead character developed further and see him grow and achieve at a higher level than he is. Basically I would like to see him smarten up his act.
I would also like to tick the publishers off - the number of typo's in the first 2 kindle editions was less than satisfactory. The proof readers are not doing their job - period! They too could smarten up their act!!!

To be honest, I stopped reading this book about a quarter through. Both of Jimmy Fox's 1st and 2nd books are very wordy, but not much plot. I had hoped the second book would be better than the first. He has a good premise to start with, a New Orleans genealogist who is struggling to make ends meet but has excellent knowledge about old court houses, private collections of historical records, etc. His sleuth is a single guy who spends a lot of times in bars and dives, and checking out attractive women. He is computer illiterate but in the last half of the first book he gets an assistant who is a tech wiz, an interesting character underutilized in the 2nd book. I want to read more about the unusual things that happen, or even the EZ, stumble over, mysteries solved when hunting down genealogical records for his customers. This book would have been a really good short story. Books solving mysteries and murders with genealogy has a couple of other authors that weave better tales.

This is the second Nick Herald book I have read. I enjoyed it more than Deadly Pedigree and have bought Jackpot Blood to read sometime soon. Genealogical mysteries are a genre I really like. Jimmy Fox's writing is very readable and kept my interest throughout the book. There are plenty of twists and turns set against the backdrop of New Orleans. Until I started reading these mysteries, I didn't realize how many resources of all kinds there are from which to research ancestry.

There was no way I was going to enjoy this book. When I began reading it, all I could focus on were the excessive number of adjectives that jumped off the page at me. I found myself reading them out loud to my husband and laughing. I had almost decided to give up on it after the first chapter. But I read. I read anything, and everything, so I pushed on. I am very glad I did.
Jimmy Fox has created a character who is just like you and me. He has issues and he lives on. The genealogy aspect is handled very well and I found the whole premise to be believable and entertaining. A little bit of mystery, a little more mayhem, and people you really like and dislike.
The beginning of the book is a tough read, but after a chapter or two, Fox finds his stride and gives readers a book that is quite good. In fact, I ended up enjoying it so much I had to force myself not to dive right into the next book. I have already purchased it, but I try not to read two books by the same author right in a row, Funny how writers never write fast enough for readers.
Thank you Jimmy Fox for making me glad I invested the time. Well done.

It started out slowly but once it picked up, I couldn’t put it down. Interesting characters and setting, fascinating story.

How I wish Jimmy Fox would write at least dozen more books in this series! The main character is so much fun and so real - great personality. Love the storyline which is nicely developed and fast-paced. The New Orleans setting is so true to life you'll think you were there! Wonderful read!!

This is an excellent treatment of the subject of vanity and how people brag about their ancestors as though there were responsible for them. If some think they came from a better class of people it gives them license to look down on their neighbors. When those beliefs are based on lies they will sometimes go to great lengths to protect their delusion.
The story is a little uneven and parts of it are less then believable. All in all it's a good read

Good,& very good. Exciting & in places gripping. . genealogical detective ,a bit of an anti hero! Would recommend it as a good read. Being set in new Orleans adds to it really.

Very dull

This was, in my opinion, not very well written, not very interesting and the characters were rather wooden and completely unconvincing. A pity since the concept was clever and it ought to have been gripping.

I remained interested throughout and liked the characters. My genealogy skills are rather lax, I now feel. I found his style a little wordy at first...but got used to it.

Not bad

Long slow bit hard work. Too many paragraphs with long words saying very little, basic story not bad but could have been told in half the time.
