Started out slow but then I couldn’t put it down. It captured the emotions of another time and people. Very haunting and I for sure want more.
I myself do genealogy but not like Nick …

Once again, I have been rewarded with a fascinating genealogical mystery by Jimmy Fox. The intricate Indian information, as well as the various criminal elements make this a great read!

I admit this book was not my favorite Nick Herald book. Nevertheless, it was still a rousing tale and definitely worth reading. The book dealt more with the Native American tribes in Louisiana than with our hero, Nick or his wonderful assistant Hawty. They seemed to take a back seat to the unfolding mystery instead of being in the driver's seat. Still always a pleasure to follow Nick Herald and his friends. Hope there will be more books to follow!

It is so obvious that the author (Fox) really knows genealogy and the processes involved as well as the history and practice of the tribal/federal recognition process, tribal gaming and the tribal-federal/state government relationship(s). Fox expertly intertwined these historical facts/processes within the storyline to create a plot that holds you glued to the pages to the very end. You will find yourself invested not only in Nick Herald as a fallible human being yet expert genealogist, trying to uncover the reason for the murders, but, you will become invested in the people of this community and their history and how that history comes forward to affect their contemporary lives and relationships. An Excellent book!

The story of Louisiana tribes was interesting but I was disappointed that there really wasn't much genealogical research I could relate to.

When the Katagoula Tribe of Indians of Louisiana decide to open a casino, they decide to hire a genealogist to check the lineage of the tribe members. Of course they hire Nick Herald, and another exciting adventure begins.

I hate reviewing books that I couldn't finish BUT this is a real let down from an author I have enjoyed in the past. Nick the hero hardly gets a look in and the amount of needless description is endless. I well known author once said to me, let the characters tell the story. In this case they barely get a look in either.
I got half way through the book before I felt I was wasting my time and closed it.
Never ever let description ruin a good story, half of what is written here is not relevant to what should be an exciting genealogical chase.
Not my idea of Jimmy Fox's best at all :(
