ABOUT JOSEPH ALTON, M.D. AND AMY ALTON, A.R.N.P. Joseph Alton practiced as a board-certified Obstetrician and Pelvic Surgeon for more than 25 years before retiring to devote his efforts to preparing your family medically for any scenario. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Surgeons for many years, served as department chairman at local hospitals and as an adjunct professor at local university nursing schools. He has been a speaker at various survival and preparedness conferences on the subject of medical readiness in austere times. A member of MENSA, Dr. Alton collects medical books from the 19th century to gain insight on off-the-grid medical protocols. Amy Alton is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse-Midwife. EXACTLY what I needed

The wealth of information in this book is astounding. Everything I can think of facing in a "no doctor/dentist" society is covered (short of MAJOR surgeries)- even minor surgical issues (i.e., how to suture). Anything which would require major surgery - well, I may be out of luck - I'm probably not going to be removing an appendix or doing a heart bypass, no matter how many books I read. But anything short of "major" I feel prepared for. Whereas there are references to other books and videos IF you want additional information, it certainly isn't necessary to consult those as well. I think the author references them for those who want to read/see more of the same. To me, this is a stand alone book and I'm going to order more as gifts. Without a doubt, the BEST disaster medical guide I've read.

I'm a Wilderness First Responder (with a lapsed EMT cert,) and I found this book to be extremely helpful. - Most of my medical books last protocol on care is...."get the patient to the hospital ASAP." A book with information on what to do IF that is not possible is just the bees knees in my humble opinion. And that is what this book does in a clear and straight forward manor. - I hope to be able to meet the Doc and his wife at one of their classes, if their journey's take them anywhere near Bigfoot Country in Northern California. It would be money well spent.

One last note. In regards to "core" items, I live by the rule of two is one, and one is none. So I just bought another copy of this book, as I know the original will be put through the wringer as it is read, and reread.

I'm an EMT-I99 from very rural countryside with some addition education in areas like pathophysiology, pharmacology, anatomy/physiology so I found this book to be on the simple side, but that is great if you have little to no medial training (or to supplement areas you're lacking training). Some of the things it addresses are the treatment acute and chronic health problems, how to use herbs for treatment of medical conditions (you should already know what herbs are what, and how to use them, this mostly just tells you what conditions they can be used for), using meds after they've expired, and antibiotic use (including the use of fish antibiotics). Good reference material for any time you might find yourself on your own without medical help (short-term or long-term). It pretty much sticks with what conditions you have a chance of treating and the authors aren't shy about stating when there is a poor prognosis for life-threats without advanced medical care. I personally will add this to my library to be cross referenced with other books I've collected, however, It could suffice as a stand alone book if it needed too. If you buy only one medical book of this genre, buy this one.

This is absolutely the best post collapse medical preparation book I have ever written. It is full of very practical and well written advise and gives numerous references to other needed information. Not only read it but highlighted parts and will use the recommended books and medicines as a shopping guide for future purchases, and the U-Tube recommended list as a weekly training guide. Recommend that all preppers purchase and read this book

Probably the thing I appreciate most about this book is the non-judemental attitude of this doctor. He has written without the attitude that most doctors carry regarding the general public being uneducated, inept and unable to make evaluations and determinations for their own health and well being. While recognizing that some things are beond the scope of most people and some other things beyond the scope of some people, he forges ahead anyway with the realization that you are using this book most likely because "the end" has arrived and there are no doctors, you are on your own. So for better or worse, here is what you'll to need to care for yourself and loved ones, I'm just tired of doctors saying the equivalent of, "Don't worry your pretty little head, I'll take care of this.", when you know full well, they won't and can't.

The book has a wealth of knowledge for those aligned with the subjects. Almost every prepper/survival/why not website I have "Googled" mentioned this book. I'm halfway thru it, and I'm impressed with the info about herbal remedies. It does very well to bring your mind from modern medicine into a thought regarding natural relief for the most common of ailments. One thing that I can say about the book is that a good protion of the first couple chapters is common sense. I was a Combat Life Saver in the Army and I believe a lot of what is said is obvious, but it will be different for someone who is a noob.

After reading a good portion of this book I know what other areas of medicine (books) I need to catch up on; that includes natural remedies for sprains, sinus infections, digestive issues, and general illnesses. It also refers to sutures and other semi advanced skills that should be looked at as well. I've searched several websites and articles but this book is the best in recommending medical supplies to have on hand, PERIOD.

I feel much more confident if SHTF or WORL or whatever those other random letters mean, I won't be in as bad of a position as most.

So as not to repeat other reviews, this volume should have been published in hardbound cover, and not the terribly cheap binding that it currently is published in. One-third through the volume the cheap cardboard binding BROKE and pages became loosened!

With that said, God bless the authors (Dr. and Mrs Alton) for sacrificing their time, energy and money to help other discerning American citizens prepare themselves for what will likely be a major national or regional man-made or natural critical incident in our lifetime. Some Believers may call it a Wrath from God, others may call it the rise of The Antichrist. Either way, each one of us is obligated to protect the dwelling place of The Holy Spirit (ourselves), along with protecting those who God placed in our stewardship.

The Doom and Bloom Survival Medicine Handbook will help you do that.
