Curious George: Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys Paperback – Picture Book, April 20, 2009

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

With afterword by Louise Borden Now in paperback: The first story to feature Curious George, with a historical afterword by Louise Borden.

“There is originality and a childlike humor in both the amusing antics and engaging pictures.”—Booklist

A lonely giraffe with no playmates meets nine monkeys with no home. Can there be a happy ending? Of course there can—one of the monkeys is Curious George!
This is the first story to feature Curious George, and when you read it, you’ll know why children demanded that Margret and H.A. Rey give him his very own adventures. Enjoy the fun on every page of this playful celebration of imagination and friendship. Louise Borden, author of The Journey that Saved Curious George, has written an afterword placing Cecily G. in historical context vis-a-vis the development of Curious George and the Reys’ personal journey.

About the Author

H. A. Rey and his wife, Margret, first introduced the world to the bighearted, fun-loving, mischievous hero Curious George in 1941, and young readers have been in love with him ever since. Curious George has been successfully adapted into a major motion picture and an Emmy Award–winning television show on PBS, and Pretzel and the Puppies, based on their picture books, is a streaming series on Apple TV+. curiousgeorge.com; pretzelandthepuppies.com

Margret and H. A. Rey created many books during their lives together, including Curious George, one of the most treasured classics of all time, as well as other favorites like Pretzel, Spotty, and Find the Constellations. They had many pets—including two marmoset monkeys that joined them on one of their steamship journeys across the Atlantic. Committed philanthropists in their own lives, a portion of proceeds from each Curious George book sold flows to the Curious George Foundation, which funds programs for children that encourage inquisitiveness in learning and exploring. Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

Cecily Giraffe is alone and George and his family are homeless. They meet and play. Cecily has an idea that George and his family can live with her.

It's a cute story full of whimsy . This is the first story where Curious George appears before he goes off on his own. It's a good story to teach children about pretend and working together to help each other.

At the end of the book is a short biography of the author and his wife. I enjoyed that more. It helps children to learn more of the world and the past.

I loved this book when I was a child, so I asked my mom if she remembered the story with the giraffe and the monkeys and luckily she knew the title. I was so excited to get the edition with the history of the story included in the back. Overall, this book was in great condition and arrived quickly. I’m excited to read it to my boys now and share the story I held dear as a kid.

I love having the book Curious George made his debut in! My boys have loved George and I'm excited to share this book with them! I'm a school librarian, so I also read it to my young students. They get a kick out of seeing George in his first book!

This is the book that came before the Curious George series and one of the 9 monkeys is George. H.A.'s publisher suggested that his next book focus on George and rest is history! The story is a little crazy and not as good as the later 7 CG books but because it has George in it, it is worth buying...especially if you love "all things George"!

My kids and now my granchildren love this story. The kids are fascinated by the monkeys. It is a treasured classic that I remember being presented on Captain Kangaroo. For me the tale presents a positive concept of sadness and happiness for children.I bought this hard cover edition for my grandkids. They keep it in their bookcase. I am sure we will be enjoying story time for many years to come.
