    People generally speak of this bio when talking about "the good ones" on Henry Miller. I disagree. While in-depth, many facts listed are incorrect because of a lack of checking (although many checkers were used) with factual records. Dearborne's biggest angle seems to be to show that Miller was always a closet homosexual & June was a lesbian junkie. While interesting to fans of Miller, a much better written, more accurate biography is available from Robert Ferguson & I would highly recommend reading his version over Dearborne's if you were to only read one Miller bio.

    I'd never heard of Henry Miller, but heard the author (Mary Dearborn) speak. The book really drew me in. This is an in-depth study of a person who toiled to become a writer, found decades of hurdles (and poverty), but kept going. It's because of people such as Miller that America has books that contain sex scenes, and you can be against that if you'd like (thus, your vote is for censorship); personally, I appreciate that he was one of the trailblazers of free speech in literature. While his behaviors made him an egotist/misogynist, it's fascinating to read about his vulnerabilities with regard to women, and how he grew up cowering in his mother's presence; all of which shines a light on who he became. As much as DNA makes us who we are, so does environment. It seems that Miller wanted to love women, but had terrible critical thinking skills when it came to who he let into his life. While I won't be reading his sexually-explicit novels, I picked up his Stand Still Like the Hummingbird and found his first essay thoughtful. He was a deeper thinker than he's been given credit for.

    This book is apparently only available through resellers, and today, the one available copy is priced at $68.

    Although subtitled "A Biography," in fact, it is a psycho-sexual biography. I know the history of Henry Miller's life during the period he shared with Anais Nin quite well having read her diaries (both the highly edited and "unedited" versions) and some of her works. I never really had a good understanding of Miller's second wife June until I read this book.

    If you can find this book, highly recommend picking it up. Look for it at discount book stores and public library sales.

    First, I will be honnest. I have only red 80 pages of this book (about to give up).
    I go through hundreds of bios, but rarely have I red one as negatively slanted as this one.
    There is a lot of research and knowledge to it... And that is its best side... But the interpretation of the facts can be pretty scary if not right down wishfull at times.
    Everything is told in a negative fashion! With no love for the subject whatsoever.
    Nothing wrong with finding some negative side to anyone, I didn't expect a fan bio, only
    a cultured and balanced one. It makes one wonder? Why spending so much time writting about someone unliked?
    Well... The author seems too personaly involved... Obsesed with a feminist agenda totaly incompatible with writting about Miller inteligently. It feels like a bio written by a scorned woman.
    Read this book if you like good facts, Tarot card quality interpretation and feel like being nagged for 300 pages...

    Only Erica Jong's attempt to capture the genius of HM gets at all close to what he was about but at least this bio is well written and doesn't belittle him too much. It will give you a basic outline of the events of his life and will be interesting to a reader who is just encountering his work.
